In den WarenkorbBoxed card game, 95 x 120 x 22mm, comprising two sets of cards, a blue set of 48 batting cards and a green set of 50 bowling cards, with folded book of rules, and three folded scorecard sheets printed on both sides, three cards neatly completed in red ink; a couple of cards a little browned, with some light soiling and furling to score sheets and rules; in the original decorative box, one corner of lid slightly worn, base of box a little foxed, with some light edge wear but otherwise very good. A charmingly illustrated card game in excellent condition that attempts to simulate the game-flow on an actual cricket match. Whilst no doubt of appeal to a devoted cricket fan, as the rules state it 'can be played by anyone, old or young, male or female, cricketer or non-cricketer. It can by played in teams of eleven a side or any number below it down to one a side and is (as the inventor can vouch) a most satisfying game of Patience. All the form and thrills of cricket are here (without the "Rain stopped Play" notices!). Matches should be two innings each side, the winner being the side which has scored most runs after four completed innings, or has dismissed its opponents twice for a smaller score'. The game consists of 98 colourfully designed cards: a blue set of 48 batting cards and a green set of 50 bowling cards. 'From the bowling deck a number of individual bowler piles are created (i.e., 5 piles if 5 bowlers are indicated by the defensive player). The batting cards are then shuffled and split into 2 piles (1 for each batsman), then the 1st batsman flips a card from his pile. If a 2, 4, or 6 is played, the score is recorded and the 1st batsman continues play. If a 1 or 3 is played, the score is recorded and the play moves to the 2nd batsman. If a "How's That" card is played, the defensive player flip the top card from the "active bowler" pile (i.e., the pile designated as the bowler for the current over) and scores the result (i.e., run out, stumped, Not out, Leg-bye, etc.). Batting cards are reshuffled every three overs; bowling cards are reshuffled every five overs. The game flow and rules closely follows the real game of cricket - an over consists of 6 bowled balls (cards) plus extras, batsman change sides after each over, 10 wickets taken constitute an inning, etc. As with the real cricket, the goal of the game is to outscore your opponent over two innings'. The illustrations are redolent of Punch cartoons and also have a 'Searlesque' quality about them, although the box lid is signed 'Stoke' - whom we have so far been unable to identify. The game is commonly believed to have first appeared in 1932, though a games and toys trade catalogue dated 1953 makes an announcement for this 'new cricket card game just published'. The present example does not have a price sticker on the box as sometimes found.…

In den WarenkorbMost charming set of miniature playing cards for use of a somewhat daring party game between young people of both sexes. The 42 cards, each with an illustration of a couple and a four-line verse, are either titled "Cloris" or "Roosje". The Cloris cards were divided between the boys and the Roosje cards between the girls. One of the young men would "propose" by reading the verse of one of his cards, and one of the young ladies would answer by reading hers. The verses were full of love and desire, but since the cards were read at random, Roosje's reponse would not always be the logical answer to Cloris' proposal, leading to hilarious situations. The name of the game most likely refers to De bruiloft van Kloris en Roosje, which was a Dutch farce written by Dirk Buysero at the end of the 17th century. The play became incredibly popular. It was performed yearly throughout most of the 18th century and still widely known in the 19th century. The slipcase is scuffed and partly torn around the edges and corners. Otherwise in good condition.l Cat. De Koning 617; Gumuchian 3223. The cards are kept in the original publisher's marbled slipcase (ca. 4.8 x 7.2 cm) with 2 engraved labels, one with the title and imprint, and one with the rules of the game. Set of 42 lithographed miniature playing cards, 21 for Cloris, printed in grey, and 21 for Roosje, printed in blue.…

In den WarenkorbA charming set of playing cards based on the film Nankyoku Tairiku ("The South Pole"), recounting the story of the 1956-57 Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. The cards show scenes of penguins, the research ship Soya, and the expedition members. In 1955 the Japanese government announced plans to send a research group to Antarctica in the following year. A team of 53 scientists led by Professor Nagata Takeshi set off on 8 November 1956, the first time Japan had explored the south pole since the early 1900s. They set up the Syowa Station on East Ongul Island before being emergency airlifted out of a storm. A documentary film focusing on the expedition was released in June 1957, directed by Hayashida Shigeo and titled Nihon nankyoku chiiki kansokutai no kiroku: Nankyoku Tairiku. This game was released to complement the film. Karuta is a traditional Japanese matching game where each pictorial card is assigned a letter of the Japanese alphabet and must be paired with an associated poem, sentence, or proverb. The player who can make the most matches wins. Galbraith, p. 133. 90 playing cards (61 x 81 mm), landscape or portrait, 45 with colour photographic illustrations on one side, 45 lettered in black on one side. Housed in original pictorial box (170 x 132 x 35 mm) lettered in red and black. Lacking instructional booklet. Cards a little toned and bowed; box scuffed with minor loss in places, bottom with some damp-staining, remains of plastic wrap on lid verso, old repairs in places: a very good example.…
