Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Born and raised on a small farm in Pembrokeshire, Wales, John Treasure Jones went to sea when he was fifteen. For the first four years he was indentured as an apprentice, surviving the oceans in a small tramp steamer. Slowly, however, he worked his way up to become Captain of the most famous ocean…liner afloat, Cunard's RMS Queen Mary. During the Second World War, as a Commander in the Royal Navy Reserve, he was torpedoed in the Atlantic and mentioned twice in Despatches. In the post-war years he mixed with film stars and royalty, commanding several of the famous Cunard liners, such as the Saxonia, Mauretania and Queen Elizabeth. In 1967 he took his final command - Queen Mary on her last voyage - a 12,000 - mile trip from Southampton to her retirement home in Long Beach, California. Captain Treasure Jones dies in 1993, but his manuscript was recently found and has been edited by his son-on-law to be reproduced here for the first time. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Gilt-lettered black cloth a little rubbed, sunned and marked; front cover slightly bowed; extremities a little bumped; edges a little foxed and marked; flyl…eaves lightly discoloured; a very good copy. The autobiography of British soldier, artist and sculptor Adrian Jones (1845-1938). Pages 111-114 (and the plate facing page 96) refer to his Boer War Memorial sculpture at the entrance to Government House at the corner of North Terrace and King William Street, Adelaide. Jones tells the story from the initial request by 'an influential Committee, representing the City of Adelaide' chaired by Sir Kiffin Thomas, to the unveiling in 1904 and Sir William Sowden's letter of appreciation some 21 years later. The Memorial 'was designed along the vigorous lines that appeal so strongly to the Australian people. Indeed, many Australians told me that they thought it the best statue in the country, but this may have been said to please me' (page 112). His 'magnum opus, however, was his "Peace Quadriga", 1912, for Constitution Arch, Hyde Park Corner, his hopes for a major unveiling ceremony (and perhaps even a knighthood) dashed by the death of his great advocate, King Edward VII, in 1910'. Pages [xi]- xvi with open tears in the head margins and foredges just touching the text on p.xvi but with no textual loss. A six page Subscribers List suggests a…limitation in the numbers printed. Very lightly browned in the head margins otherwise a clean crisp copy. Publisher's pink paper backed boards, and white paper spine, sometime repaired, all a little rubbed and slightly soiled. A most acceptable copy of a rare book, held institutionally in eight locations, but very rarely seen for sale. We have been unable to discover much information about the author, Capt Jenkin Jones was a captain in the army and apart from the book offered here he authored of a small number poetical works, and plays. A review of this work in The Monthly Review or Literary Journal, Vol. XXV, 1798, page 105/106 states - ' This poetical allegory is one of the most defective we have seen as a whole, and will not bear a critical examination. . This piece appears to be a whimsical medley of the grave and the ridiculous, the fanciful and the sentimental. ' The author's name suggests he is of Welsh descent, but this work is not recorded in Libri Walliae - 'A catalogue WelshBooksA CATALOGUE OF WELSH BOOKS AND BOOKS PRINTED IN WALES 1546-1820 (2 VOLUMES)1987'.The Dictionary of Welsh Biography notes three authors with the name Jenkin Jones, their dates are much earlier and do not fit in with our author. Spine rubbed and slightly worn, a few hairline cracks and chips to date label, a few slight indentations and light scratches to covers, corners slightly worn, shelf wear to edges, inner paper hinges neatly repaired with matching cloth, small grazed patch on front pastedown, some brown spotting to title page and prelims, 8 pages heavily foxed in Book III, occasional pale brown spot to margins, occasional pale age-browning, contents otherwise clean, small closed edge tear to map and 2 plans, neatly repaired on reverse. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy. Britain's part in the War of the First Coalition which represented the first major concerted effort of multiple European powers to contain Revolutionary France. Early reports on the Far East includ…ing the first published account of Tibet by an Englishman, Captain Samuel Turner, who was sent there by Warren Hastings. It contains Turner's letters to John Macpherson, the Governor-General of Bengal relating to his interview with Teeshoo Lama at the Monastery of Terpaling, and an account of a journey to Tibet made by Poorungeer, a Gosseyn, and his reception by the Lama. (Turner's full narrative was not published until 1800.) The volume also includes studies of eastern arts, sciences and literature including chapters on the Gods of Greece, Italy, and India, the chronology of the Hindus, the Indian game of chess, the antiquity of the Indian Zodiac, the plants of India, an account of Nepal, and a discourse on the method of catching wild elephants at Tipura. Sir William Jones made his name with his Persian grammar, founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal (1784), and edited its Journal of Asiatic Researches (PMM pp 141-142). ESTCN 8164.
