Stevens is best known for his translation of Don Quixote in 1700. This is a reprint of Stevens' 1707 translation. It has a limited print run of 200 copies. La Picara Justina is a picaresque Spanish novel with an unknown author. It is generally attributed to Francisco Lopez de Ubeda. In original full vellum binding. Externally generally smart with minor bumping to the extremities. Several handling marks to boards and spine. Slight rubbing and bumping to spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with the occasional spots throughout. Very Good. book.

Contemporary blind-stamped spotted calf neatly rebacked, with gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. Monumental history of Portugal written by renown Portuguese historian and poet, Emanuel de Faria y Sousa (1590-1649) and continued by John Stevens (1662-1726), English captain, Hispanist and translator, better known for his translation of Don Quixote in 1700. This work is complete despite the jump in pagination between page 200 and page 209. Some rubbing along edges of covers. Minor and sporadic offsetting and foxing throughout. Binding in overall good, interior in good+ condition.

The Spanish works are attributed to Francesco Lopez de Ubeda and Andres Perez de Leon, Fernanso Rojas, Gonzales and Juan de Avila. Full calf leather binding with gilt lettering to spine. The first edition of this scarce and important work. John Stevens (c.16621726), was a translator and antiquary. He settled in London in 1695 to make a living as a professional writer, putting his command of Spanish and Portuguese to practical, though not lucrative, use. Over the next thirty years he published over twenty translations, mainly from the Spanish, in addition to histories of Spain and Portugal and a painstakingly researched Spanish dictionary. He satisfied the contemporary taste for books of travel by making available some of the classics of the conquista: accounts written from an Iberian, rather than an English point of view. Though self-deprecating about his literary style, he produced a lively and successful translation of Quevedo's comic satires. He preferred fact to fiction, and required a tale to carry a moral. The austere and devout Quevedo, champion of absolute monarchy, was his favourite writer, and in 1709 he recruited him to the Tory cause by translating two of his political works in defence of Dr Henry Sacheverell. In a full calf binding. There is some wear to the extremities, particularly to the spine which is chipped, and to the front board which is damaged with loss of leather. The corners are bumped and the boards are also rubbed in places. There is an ownership plate to the front pastedown. The front board is detached but present, and the rear inner hinge is strained. The binding is firm and the rear board is attached, though by the cords only. Internally the book is bright apart from some occasional spotting and handling marks. There are also some water marks affecting the beginning of the book in particular. Good Only. book.

Zustand: Good. 20 x 15 cm., [viii]+244+[12] pages with engraved map, folding plan and four engraved illustrations in text and index. 18th century marbled boards, spine renewed; internal some general toning, a few pages with chipping to margin, small marginal loss at fold to map (not touching map), fold out of Cusco with toning on fold and old repair without loss to verso, stamps of the mercantile library, small losses to last leaf, last pages closely trimmed. There are stories of "immense hidden treasure", "brave Indians", and "poisonous worms." Cieza de Leon's Chronica del Peru (first published in 1553 in Seville), and here in the first English edition. is one of the most accurate eyewitness accounts of Peruvian Indian culture before its destruction. There are detailed descriptions of geography, ethnography, flora and fauna and he was some native Peruvian animal species and vegetables.

Still, though, tightly bound, rather bright and internally very clean. Original spine label still intact along with the five raised bands. 12mo., 374 pgs. plus a significant table of the principal transactions in each kings reign. A wonderful early look into the history of British taxation.

A limited edition work, limited to two=hundred copies. 'La Picara Justina', translated here as 'The Spanish Jilt', is a Spanish picaresque novel. This copy isn't an extract of the diverting and entertaining passages from the original publication. It is unknown who the original author is, though it is debated to be the Spanish doctor and write Francisco Lopez de Ubeda. Translated here by John Stevens. Stevens was a Hispanist and translator, and is best known for his 1700 translated of 'Don Quixote'. In a full vellum binding. Externally, generally smart. Some marking and discolouration to the boards, as is usual with vellum binding. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with a couple of spots. Very Good. book.
