[viii],161 pp. With 87 photographs, 3 sketches, folding map of Arctic Bay, Baffin Island; folding map of route of Lavoie and party on Baffin Land; and large folding map ((60x50 cm.) of 'surveys and discoveries in the arctic regions, with additions and changes to 1911 on coast… of Baffin Island'. Green cloth with gilt lettering. (library copy from the University of Cape Town, with small sticker on spnine, ex-libris and small stamp on title) Joseph Elzéar Bernier (1852-1934) was a Canadian mariner. "From 1904 to 1911, he explored the Arctic Archipelago on annual voyages in his ship the CGS Arctic and officially claimed the islands for Canada." (Wikipedia). The Inuit fondly called him Kapitaikallak, 'stout, little captain'. Most photographs show local people, and are among the earliest pictures of the Inuit.
