Much skilled research has gone into the making of it: a period of more than twenty years was required to compile the material, and the scientific and systematic side of the work has been published in various ornithological journals. The African Handbook of Birds is a reference book, but it is primarily intended for use in the field. It has been welcomed not only by the specialist but also by those who want clear and concise information about the birds of Africa. Series II covers the southern part of Portuguese East Africa, Western Nyasaland, both Rhodesias and the whole of the rest of Southern Africa, south of the Congo watershed. Series II, Volume I comprises the families from ostriches to Wagtails, and the rest of the families will be covered by Volume II which will be published shortly. Almost all the birds are figured in colour except for a few families for which colour is not necessary and these are covered by marginal drawings in black and white.
