In den WarenkorbFIRST EDITION. 8vo. xxiii+236+[2, errata]+[4, ads]. Arabic and English text. Publisher's original red cloth binding with gilt lettering to spine and upper cover. From the library of the "Newman School of Missions" of Thabor, Jerusalem, with their book label to front pastedown. The Newman School of Missions was a historical institution located at a place called Thabor in Jerusalem, British Palestine, active at least during the 1920s to 1940s. Some rubbing and fading to cloth, slightly cocked, contents clean and unmarked save for one ink scribble to lower portion of page 95, generally a pleasant copy in the original cloth. An important and uncommon English translation of the Mu'allaqat ('The Suspended Odes'), one of the most celebrated compilations of pre-Islamic poetry. The seven poems, by Imru' al-Qais, Tarafa, Zuhayr, Labid, 'Antara Ibn Shaddad, 'Amr ibn Kulthum, and Harith ibn Hilliza, are believed to have been hung in the Kaaba (although many scholars have argued the title is less literal, referring instead to suspension in the mind). Due to its renown, the Mu'allaqat attracted several important commentaries by leading scholars of early Arabic poetry. This edition is translated line by line, with notes (alternative readings, historical context etc.) by Capt. F.E. Johnson. It also features an introduction and analysis by Sheikh Faizullabhai, a Fellow of the University of Bombay.

First edition. First edition. Engraved frontispiece and 25 engraved plates most by J. Basire after W. Jett and J. Nicholls. Title-page printed in red and black, text in double columns. Pagination irregular, but text complete. Pp. [4], [5]-176, 187-194, 185-232, 223, 234-235, 226-323, 326-327, 326-406, [403 [for 407], 408-409, 406 [for 410], 411-484, [2, Index]. 1 vols. Folio (13-3/4 x 9 inches). First edition (with the catchword "As" on the first page of the introduction). Originally published in seventy-two weekly twopenny numbers, the work was a compendium of Alexander Smith's History of the Lives of the Most Noted Highwaymen (1714) and Johnson's own A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most Notorious Pyrates (1724). Johnson is almost certainly a pseudonym. In the middle twentieth century the work was attributed to Daniel Defoe but this theory no longer has any currency. Includes accounts of Edward Teach (Blackbeard), the female pirates Mary Read and Anne Bonny, Jack Shepherd, Henry Morgan, and Jonathan Wild. The illustrations, largely engraved by Isaac Basire after Nicholls, have a robust Hogarthian vigor and a number exemplify the archetypal perception of the highwayman holding up a stage coach at gunboat. A choice copy, with provenance to among the greatest of book collectors, of this classic early eighteenth-century gallery of rogues, scoundrels, pirates, and more. ESTC T112552 Full red morocco, bound by Bedford, covers with multiple gilt rules, gilt floral cornerpieces, spine with raised bands in seven compartments, second and third gilt-lettered, other with repeat floral and filigree motif in gilt, all edges gilt, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers. Provenance: Robert Hoe III (morocco booklabel to front pastedown; his sale, Anderson Auction Company, 8 January 1912, lot 1797) Engraved frontispiece and 25 engraved plates most by J. Basire after W. Jett and J. Nicholls. Title-page printed in red and black, text in double columns. Pagination irregular, but text complete. Pp.
