Captain James Cook (1728-1779) was a British explorer, cartographer and naval officer, known for his three voyages to the Pacific. He provided the first recorded contact with Eastern Australia and Hawaii, and the first circumnavigation of New Zealand. His travels also included the Antarctic, America, and the Bering Strait. His first voyage -- spanning three years in the Southern Hemisphere on HMS Endeavor -- was commissioned by King George III and departed from Plymouth Dockyard in August of 1768. The Royal Society had spent the better part of that year petitioning the King to finance a scientific expedition in service of observing Venus crossing the face of the Sun, which would aid in measuring the distance from the Earth to the Sun. The voyage would double as an exploration of the Southern seas and a search for the mythical Terra Australis Incognita, though this part of the mission was not made public until the day before the ship launched. The Royal Society had suggested that Alexander Dalrymple, a geographer from Scotland, be given the post, but he would only accept if he was bestowed a brevet commission as a captain. Aghast by this demand, Navy officials chose Cook instead. On his final voyage to the Pacific Islands, tensions rose between the Hawaiian population and the European explorers, spurred on by Europeans desecrating a burial site. This resulted in Captain Cook's murder and dismemberment, leaving some of his body parts for a burial at sea. The task of compiling and publishing the official account of Captain Cook's first voyage was given to John Hawkesworth (1715-1773), a literary critic, essayist, and editor of The Gentleman's Magazine. The Hawkesworth volumes were one of most popular publications of the XVIIIc, with the 2,000 sets of the first edition released on June 9th, 1773, selling out almost immediately and necessitating a second edition of 2,500 sets published less than 8 weeks later. Despite the commercial success, the initial release was a PR nightmare for Hawkesworth. He faced immense criticism due to the text's horrendous formatting and numerous pagination and bibliographical errors (the majority of which were corrected for this, the second edition). The bookplate, which boasts an unusual phrase (trans. "neither fast nor strong"), is likely from the late 1700s. Heraldic mottos with a similar sentence structure crop up throughout the late XVIIIc, such as the more popular "nec elatus nec dejectus" of the Thomas and Shanahan families). The United Kingdom's National Trust Collections cites a similar bookplate, which they posit is XVIIIc, but is not yet identified. Theodore "Ted" Benttinen (1948-2023) was an MIT-educated oceanographer and explorer who went to both poles on research missions. Benttinen amassed a formidable collection of books of exploration, particularly strong in Pacific voyages as well as in polar accounts. The present volum.

The voyage took in Kerguelen Island, Tasmania, New Zealand, and the Cook, Tonga, and Society Islands, sailed north and discovered Christmas Island and the Hawaiian Islands, which Cook named the Sandwich Islands. His life of Cook caused him no little anxiety on publication "A Narrative of the Life of Captain Cook must principally consist of the voyages and discoveries he made, and the difficulties and dangers to which he was exposed. The private incidents concerning him, though collected with the utmost diligence, can never compare, either in number or importance, with his public transactions. Those who are best acquainted with Captain Cook's expeditions, may be pleased with reviewing them in a more compendious form, and with having his actions placed in a closer point of view, in consequence of their being divested of the minute nautical and other details, which were essentially necessary in the voyages at large" (Preface). Abridged, and so without all the technical nautical details found in earlier quarto edition, but often preferred by readers because "the work reads more like an adventure" (Hill). On board were a number of significant crew members: William Bligh, James Burney, James Colnett, George Vancouver, and John Webber as artist to the expedition. The voyage took in Kerguelen Island, Tasmania, New Zealand, and the Cook, Tonga, and Society Islands, sailed north and discovered Christmas Island and the Hawaiian Islands, which Cook named the Sandwich Islands. "Cook charted the American west coast from Northern California through the Bering Strait as far north as latitude 70 degrees 44' before he was stopped by pack ice. He returned to Hawaii for the winter and was killed in an unhappy skirmish with the natives over a boat. Charles Clerke took command, and after he died six months later, the ships returned to England under John Gore. Despite contemporary English hostilities with the United States and France, the scientific nature of this expedition caused the various governments to exempt these vessels from capture. "In three great voyages Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the southern hemisphere than all his predecessors together had done. He was the first really scientific navigator, and his voyages made great contributions to many fields of knowledge" (Hill). Cook conducted his three voyages between the years of 1768 and 1779. During his expeditions, the British naval officer traversed the South Pacific three times, twice braving into the Antarctic Circle. He was the first European to make contact with the Eastern coast of Australia: "The date of Captain James Cook's exploration of the eastern coast marks the beginning of a new era in the history of Australia. Cook took possession of the country for Great Britain. From the resemblance of its coasts to the southern shores of Wales, he called it New South Wales" (Jenks). In June 1770 the 'Endeavour' was badly damaged running aground on the Great Barrier Reef. The ship limped into Endeavour River on the coast of New South Wales for repair. Here it was 'lightened' and 'careened' so that the damage could be repaired. Probably published in a French edition of Hawkesworth's important work "An Account of the Voyages. for making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere".

A fine view of… Van Diemen's Land, showing Cook's tracks in the 'Resolution', and originally published in Cook's third voyage: "A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean; undertaken by Command of his Majesty, for making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere: to determine the Position and Extent of the West Side of North America; its distance from Asia; and the Practicality of a Northern Passage to Europe" first published in 1784. Thomas Bowen followed in the footsteps of his more famous father Emanuel Bowen as bookseller and cartographer. In 1767 he issued the 'Atlas Anglicannus' and a world map in 1777 showing the discoveries of Captain Cook. He fell into financial difficulties and died in a Clerkenwell workhouse in 1790.".

Bronze medal (37mm); obverse uniformed bust of Cook three-quarter right, legend 'Capt. The Courage and Perseverance medal was struck soon after word of Capt. Co…ok's death reached England, via Büsching's Wà chentlichte Nachrichten (Berlin, 1780). The news had arrived in Europe via despatches sent by Clerke and King from Kamchatka, and word quickly spread to England of the events at Kealakekua Bay. The medal was produced in this period before the Resolution and Adventure returned to England in September 1780. This makes the medal one of the earliest artefacts associated with Cook's death. Rare.
