Former owner bookplate designed by James Blomfield. Foxing. Occasional ink corrections. Capt. Smith was a Freemason of some distinction in the latter part of the 18th century. Although born in England, he entered the military service of Prussia where he was initiated into one the German Masonic Lodges. (This explains the dedication to Frederick, King of Prussia.) On his return to England he was appointed Inspector of the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich and published works on military science. Rear chapter endeavours to explain why ladies have never been admitted as Masons; the author, however, is in favour of the formation of female lodges. (p. 365).James Jervis Blomfield (1879-1951) was a Canadian artist and designer best known for his design of the coat of arms of Vancouver.
