A large b .w. photograph, with hand-coloring, 30.8 x 49 cm., removed from a frame, 2 mild 'bends' across, photographer or colorist's name left corner in red Chinese Characters, photographer's name unread. *** *** *** . . . THE IMAGE WAS ACQUIRED IN HONG KONG MANY YEARS AGO . . . A CANTONESE MATRIARCH . * This is a large-size photograph. The kind usually found on the Confucian alter for ancestors and relatives. . *** THE IMAGE: The image is strong, with very clear, non-faded image, clearly photographed by a skilled photographer, in a studio environment. . *** THE CANTONESE WOMAN: The woman in the photograph was most likely a Cantonese or Hakka. She was an elderly person, perhaps 65 or 70+ years old. She has very little hair which is typical of elderly women in China. She wears a pair of very good emerald-green jade rings. Her lips are enhanced with a touch of red. Her eyes are slightly different from each other. One appears larger while the other eye-lid is drooping a bit. She looks straight ahead, posing for the camera, perhaps knowing that this is her last and final photograph, to go on the family altar. . *** THE TECHNIQUE: This work is a large single sheet black & white photograph. To this, the colorist/artist applied colors to enhance the face color, jade earrings, black silk Chong-sam [Qipao] which has the 'frogs' or traditional fasteners on the neck and right shoulder, nicely drawn in, along with the natural folds of the silk fabric. The background is enhanced by the colorist/artist half light, half in a shadow, and a kind of light background. The colorist/artist has signed his name in orange 'running grass' Chinese characters, in the lower left corner. They are exceptionally hard to read. . *** ANCESTOR/RELATIVE PHOTOGRAPH This hand-colored photograph is typical of the "ancestor" or "relative" photo framed and found on the Confucian altar in Southern China down to Vietnam. These photographs were also framed and white 'mourning' cloth wrapped over the top two corners and carried during a funeral procession, ahead of the deceased. Upon burial, these photos were then displayed on the ancestral altar. Offerings such as water, food, wine and fruit were commonly placed throughout the year and especially on the 'death anniversary.' . *** CONDITION: The photograph is laid down on a stiff board with two horizontal 'bends.' The first 'bend' is about 1/4 from the top and is fairly mild causing little damage effect on the image. The second is at the middle, just near the chin line. The 'bend' is larger than the first 'bend' and there is some minor scuffing to the 'bend' losing a small amount of color. The image appears to be stable now, with some rough restoration to the verso of the backing board. . There is some oxidation to the lower quarter, where the image probably touched the glass in a humid environment and caused some of the black to lighten its original color. . ***.…
