In parallel French and Italian. There are no plates in this copy. The plates have been removed. With a frontis of Picart. With the bookplate of Walter Wilson to the front pastedown. Giovanni Angelo Canini, 16171666, was an Italian painter and engraver of the Baroque period. Canini's greatest project was the designs, from medals, antique gems, and similar pieces, a series of portraits of illustrious characters of antiquity, accompanied with memoirs. Unfortunately, shortly after the project was begun, Canini died. The undertaking was passed on to his brother Marc Antonio. It was first published in 1699 as Iconografia di Giovanni Agnolo Canini. A reprint in Italian and French appeared at Amsterdam, 1731, with 115 plates, from engravings by Picart le Romain, and his son Bernard Picart. In full calf, recently rebacked, with the original boards. Externally, the original boards are worn, the spine with just a little shelfwear. Internally, generally firmly bound, although working loose between pages 1-21. Pages 11/12 and 19/20 are detached but present, and 291-296 are working loose. There is some browning, with foxing and intermittent tidemarks. Good Only. book.
