Pages somewhat spotted as typical of Frankfurt printings of the time, mainly untrimmed at head and foot, occasional minute restorations to blank margins. Scarce first edition of this important polemic: Campanella's contribution to the defence of Galileo, written in 1616 during the latter's first brush with the authorities but only published in 1622. The work is a spirited plea for freedom of thought (libertas philosophandi) as well as a concerted defence of the mobility of the Earth. "In addition to his interests in the astrological side of stellar phenomena, Campanella was a supporter of the Copernican system as defended by Galileo. In several works, principally the Apologia pro Galileo (1622), he sided with the embattled Florentine, not only supporting the Copernican theory but also on broader issues, including those involving the competing claims of religion and science" (DSB). The text adopts structure of a quaestio, divided into 5 chapters consisting of arguments against Galileo, their refutations, and vindications of pro-Galilean arguments. "In the Apologia, Campanella uses incisive and tightly-knit arguments while displaying an exceptionally remarkable hermeneutical skill - at times making it hard for the reader to follow without getting lost in the myriad of citations and references" (Ernst, p 164). For all its early advocacy of Copernicus, it should be noted that Campanella's tract also represents an important catalogue of contemporary objections to Galileo, dealt with item by item. Written while Campanella was still languishing in prison in Naples, the manuscript Apologia was evidently deliberately transmitted to a Protestant publishing house for publication. It bears no imprimatur much less an ecclesiastical license, and one imagines that the book's reception in Rome in 1622, written by a radical former Dominican, probably did more to cast aspersions on Galileo's case than to aid his position! According to Germana Ernst, "the treatise. enjoyed a considerable circulation in the seventeenth century and helped to connect the name of Galileo and Campanella, his 'defender'" (p 160). The work was originally sent by Campanella to Cardinal Caetani in Rome sometime before September 1616, as attested in several letters, before finally reaching the press in 1622. As he would later remind Galileo, Campanella's had been the only voice to come to Galileo's defence in print at this early date: "and recall that my text alone was published in your defence, and not the texts of others" (quoted in Ernst, p 161). The preface, purportedly written by the printer Erasmus Kempffer, betrays a deep-seated enthusiasm for heliocentrism as well as a striking familiarity with contemporary authors who discuss the Copernican doctrine. Indeed, a list is even given enumerating the pantheon of contemporary heliocentrists; when compared to Westman's list of 10 confirmed 16th century Copernicans, we find several notable additions: the German astronomer David Origan, the Venetian Platonist Franciscus Patricius, and William Gilbert and Nicholas Hill in England. First edition of 'The City of the Sun, or the Idea of a Philosophical Republic', the great classic of utopian literature. It was in a Naples prison that Tommaso Campanella (1568-1639) conceived this ideal republic. (This heterodox thinker would spend 27 years of his life in prison!) A first version, in Italian, was completed in 1602 and would not be published until 1904. He wrote a second version in Latin in 1613, which is this one, published in 1623 by his German disciple Tobias Adami. It occupies a section (pp. 415-464), with its own title page, of the 'Realis philosophiae epilogisticae', a collection of various texts by Campanella on physiology and Aristotelian philosophy. This 'City of the Sun' is inspired by Plato's 'Republic' and 'Timaeus'. In the form of a dialogue between a knight of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem and a Genoese sailor, a companion of Christopher Columbus, the author describes his ideal city. It is governed by a philosopher-priest, "Sun," assisted by three princes: "Power," "Wisdom," and "Love." It is a collectivist and egalitarian society. Among its inhabitants, everything is held in common: houses, dining halls, dormitories, furniture. Work occupies four hours of the day, and there are no prisons. "At the start of each new month, as well as at each full moon, the council is convened after a sacrifice. All individuals over the age of twenty are permitted to give their opinion on the state of the Republic and to voice their complaints against magistrates or to bestow praise upon them." This perspective would have a lasting influence on subsequent utopian works. It is worth noting that Campanella was open to new ideas and defended Galileo against the ecclesiastical authorities. In the preface to this work, Tobias Adami proclaims that Galileo's system is compatible with the Holy Scriptures. It should be recalled that Galileo's 'Il Saggiatore' was published that same year, 1623. Our copy, like a few others (the John Hay Library and St. John's College, Oxford), has no engraved border on the title page and no errata sheet, which are very likely signs of a first printing. Provenance: - Jesuit College of Lyon. Handwritten inscriptions on the title page and the following page indicating that it was cataloged in 1676. The coat of arms of the city of Lyon is gilded on the covers. - A family from the Lyon region; the book had been in their possession for at least a century. A wormhole in the lower margin at the beginning of the volume; the paper is browned, as is typical for books of this period; the gilding on the spine is faded. "A chaque nouvelle, ainsi qu'à chaque pleine lune, on rassemble, après un sacrifice, le conseil. Tous les individus au-dessus de vingt ans y sont admis à donner leur avis sur l'état de la République, à faire valoir leurs plaintes contre les magistrats ou à leur accorder des éloges." Cette vision influencera durablement les constructions utopiques postérieures. On observera que Campanella était sensible aux idées nouvelles et qu'il défendit Galilée contre les autorités ecclésiastiques. Dans la préface du présent ouvrage, Tobias Adami proclame que le système de Galilée est compatible avec les Saintes Ecritures. Rappelons que "Il Saggiatore" de Galilée a été publié cette même année 1623. Notre exemplaire, comme quelques rares autres (John Hay Library et St John's college d'Oxford), est sans la bordure gravée sur le titre et sans feuillet d'errata, signes très probables d'une premier tirage. Une piqure de ver dans la marge inférieure en début d'ouvrage, le papier est bruni comme toujours pour les livres de cette période, dorure du dos estompée.
