The author - an engineer by trade and not a professional master of arms - was able to radically re-imagine teaching the art of fencing. Agrippa's treatise is the fundamental text of Western swordsmanship. Just as earlier swordsmanship can be better understood from Agrippa's critiques, so too was his book the starting point for the rapier era. Every other treatise of the early-modern period had to deal explicitly or implicitly with Agrippa's startling transformation of the art and science of self-defense with the sword. Likewise, all of the fundamental ideas that are still used today - distance, time, line, blade opposition, counterattacks and countertime - are expressed in this paradigm-shifting treatise. This is a work that should be on the bookshelf of anyone interested in the history, practice or teaching of fencing. His treatise was also a microcosm of sixteenth-century thought. It examines the art, reduces it to its very principles, and reconstructs it according to a way of thinking that incorporated new concepts of art, science and philosophy. Contained within this handy volume are concrete examples of a new questioning of received wisdom and a turn toward empirical proofs, hallmarks of the Enlightenment. The treatise also presents evidence for a redefinition of elite masculinity in the wake of the military revolution of the sixteenth century. At the same time, is offers suggestive clues to the place of the hermetic tradition in the early-modern intellectual life and its implications for the origins of modern science. Camillo Agrippa's 'Treatise on the Science of Arms' was first published in Rome in 1553 by the papal printer Antonio Blado. The original treatise was illustrated with 67 engravings that belong to the peak of Renaissance design. They are reproduced here in full. Illustr. da 51 incisioni in rame n.t.: di queste, 32 sono a mezza pag. mentre 18 sono impresse in coppia in orizzontale su 9 doppi fogli, il tutto inciso da Giulio Fontana. Si tratta degli stessi 12 rami della prima edizione ma tagliati a metà dividendo i due avversari, formando così 24 illustrazioni, riquadrate da un filetto e arricchite in alcuni particolari soprattutto negli sfondi e nel pavimento. Le 18 tavole disposte in orizzontale nella prima edizione vengono invece qui riproposte su doppio foglio; restano invariate invece le rimanenti illustrazioni. Terza edizione - assai più rara delle precedenti - dell'opera di Agrippa, uno dei più importanti trattati di scherma del Cinquecento, profondamente innovativo nell'introduzione dell'uso della spada di punta anzichè di taglio, in modo da portare le stoccate in modo rapido per linee interne: ''.,portò un grandissimo incremento alla teorica della scherma. Forse allievo del Marozzo, ne abbreviò, ne modificò il trattato, spogliandolo di molte superfluità e vi aggiunse di suo moltissime norme. ritenuto come uno dei migliori maestri antichi, che vanti la scherma italiana e straniera. è il primo che faccia fare l'inquarto (cap. XVII). descrive vari combattimenti di due contro due e di tre contro due; il modo di battersi con due spade" (Gelli). Interessante sottolineare che in 6 tavole, forse per la prima volta nella storia dell'incisione, si tenta di raffigurare le figure in movimento: a differenza di quanto sostiene Gelli ("descrive vari combattimenti di due contro due e di tre contro due") in realtà Agrippa rappresenta in queste tavole due soli schermidori contrapposti in successive posizioni del medesimo attacco o parata. L'Agrippa, milanese, fu anche ingegnere e matematico, presentò un progetto per il trasporto dell'obelisco vaticano, si occupò di idraulica ed inventò un sistema per la pesca dei coralli. Il Dialogo filosofico-astronomico posto in fine presenta delle importanti intuizioni sul movimento dei pianeti nella loro gravitazione; vi si riferisce al f. 67 v. una incisione a piena pag. raffig. la sfera ideata dall'Agrippa. Fu ristampato separatamente con il titolo ''Modo da comporre il moto nella sfera'', nel 1573 (Honeyman Sale 37). Bellissimo esempl. assolutamente genuino nella sua pergamena d'origine: si tratta probabilmente dell'esemplare di dedica che il Pulciani regalò al Guidalotti, come si evince dalla nota di possesso sulla sguardia anteriore ''Al Signor Filippo Guidalotti''. Al contropiatto ex-libris di Robert W. Bingham e timbro non identificato di antica collezione ''G.V.''. Soli 4 esempl. censiti. Camillo Agrippa (c. 15201600) was a sixteenth-century architect, engineer, and natural philosopher. Born in Milan, he spent the majority of his career in Renaissance Rome, where he was associated with Farnese and Medici circles and was also a member of the Confraternity of St. Joseph of the Holy Land, itself a centre for artisans and artists. Primarily known as an expert on fencing and swordsmanship, Agrippa used his knowledge of geometry to revolutionise techniques in this field. In this work he applies his skills to the issue of navigation. The copies at Harvard, Folger and the Smithsonian have two folding plates (present in this copy), however, the copies held at The National Maritime Museum & University of Kwazulu Natal Library have three. There is also a portrait frontispiece of the author that is not present in this copy.…
