Diz. Biogr, It., XVII, p.210-211.

Ferrara, Appresso Giulio Cesare Cagnaccini, & Fratelli, 1585. 12mo, pp. 181 (=151) (1), b-f12 g4. Predominantly Italic letter, some Roman. Woodcut initials and head-pieces, large d Este coat of arms on title-page. Light age yellowing and spotting throughout, marginal dampstaining. Imprint repeated on verso of last, no date, early ms. note underneath it. In modern quarter vellum, decorative paper over boards, gilt-tooled lettering on half olive green, half red morocco label to spine. A lovely booklet in good condition. First printed in 1584, this booklet is the second edition of Camillo Camilli s additional five cantos, or poems, to the Gerusalemme Liberata (Jerusalem Delivered, 1581) of Torquato Tasso (1544-95). Camilli (d. 1615) was a scholar from Siena who taught letters in the Republic of Ragusa (Dalmatia). He edited a reprint of Tasso s masterpiece in 1583 with the title of Goffredo, to which he added the present work in order to develop and conclude the love stories of the characters Armida and Rinaldo and Arminia and Tancredi. Camilli s prefatory letter addresses his dedicatee, Matteo Senarega, who held important political offices in the Republic of Genoa, becoming doge of this maritime power in 1591. Senarega studied law in Louvain and Latin in Venice, where the famous printer Paolo Manuzio was his tutor. Camilli mentions the efforts made by the then chancellor and saviour of the Republic in order to prevent further clashes of civil war between the old nobility (the Doria, Cicala, Spinola, Di Negro, Vivaldi, Cattaneo, Lomellini, Grimaldi families) and the new nobility, whose party had seized the power in the oligarchy. Camilli praises Senarega s diplomatic skills and tells the reader he learnt from Aldo Manuzio the Younger that the former doge retired to private life, after his successful political manoeuvres. Moreover, Manuzio told Camilli that Senarega enjoys the pleasure of reading poetry, which is the reason why the writer decided to dedicate this work of his to Senarega. Before the first canto begins, Camilli included some celebrative verses dedicated to the great poet Tasso, written by Francesco Melchiori from Oderzo. Adams C451; USTC 818083; EDIT16 41545.

Light age yellowing, a little browning, small holes to outer blank margin of title and first, very light water stain at foot of last gathering. A very good copy in contemporary limp vellum, lacking ties, ms title to spine and lower edge, couple of ink marks or pen trials to covers, modern eps. C17 ms 'Conventus Heremit. Aug. Ex Libris(?) de Pi(?)eso', cont. ms. F. Thaddei Sbrozzij, and C17 ms 'Libro Proibito' to title. The second, expanded Aldine edition of the Italian translation of this intriguing work bringing together psychology and medicine. Juan Huarte de San Juan (1529-88) was a Spanish humanist and physician who trained at Alcalá. First published in Spanish in 1575, 'Examen de ingegnos' was his great masterpiece. The 'Essame' was included on the Index as a prohibited book at least by 1605, the present copy has a ms 'Libro proibito' on the titlepage. Nevertheless it was greatly successful, translated into several European languages (including German by the philosopher G.E. Lessing), and even English. Huarte used as a starting point the humanist pedagogical theories, to explore, with the help of Galenic medicine, the concept of talent, 'its diversity and richness, and how it affects the development of an individual in the professional sphere' (Morilla, p.161). It begins with a discussion of 'ingenium', various kinds of intelligence, and how the humours influence individual character and temperament. The first section demonstrates with an example how, if a child does not have the intelligence required for knowledge he has to acquire, not even good teachers, lots of books, and constant study will make him succeed. There follow sections on how and why some people are good at learning, and how this is helped by specific physical characteristics. Three chapters also explain how specific kinds of intelligence and memory may favour children for professions in the fields of theology, law, medicine, the military or royalty. These chapters examine physiology and diet in relation with 'ingenium', seeking 'to align each temperament with a kind of intelligence' (Morilla, p.164). A chapter is devoted to ways of having intelligent children who will benefit from education, with specific instructions on physical procreation, the most appropriate environment so that they may be born male, not female, and how their intelligence may be preserved as they grow up. A most interesting, most unusual work, in many ways ahead of its time. USTC 835991; EDIT16 CNCE 22981; Renouard 411:1; Durling 2501; Wellcome I, 3336 (1590 ed.). Not in Ahmanson-Murphy (but now at UCLA). S. Morilla & J. Tascon, 'El Examen de Ingenios de Huarte San Juan', Studia Philologica Valentina, 25 (2023), pp.159-68.

The Epistles and Gospels to be read throughout the year, according to the Church services. Originally written by the Jesuit Petrus Canisius (although only the Translators are mentioned in the title). Original full vellum binding, with titles written to a paper label on the spine. Gift inscription to the front end paper. vignette title page with inscription "librio di Guid Antonio Belerarni 1708" in ink. Publisher's introduction, Saint days of the year (with a small woodcut for each month), contents, and text. The pagination runs to page 572. The second part (Coninciano le Lettioni) has a separate pagination, but was always intended to be part of the same work, the main part finishing the register at Nn8 - the continuation beginning Aaa. There are a large number of woodcuts throughout, and each new date / lesson, has a historiated capital. A very nice copy. The vellum binding is somewhat darkened and with a little marking, but is still flexible and has no cracks to it. The hand written spine label is still legible. Internally, clean and tidy throughout. There is a little darkening to the pages with the odd page having foxing spots. A few of the pages have tiny nicks to the edges and there is a tiny amount of worm damage to the rear of the book, but none affecting the text. Overall a very nice copy of this work. This is a reprint of this work. There were numerous editions, and variations of the work by different publishers. This work is translated by Remigio Fiorentino. His real name was Remigio Nannini. He was born in Florence (Firenze) Circa 1521 He died in 1581, and was a Dominican. This was his most popular work. Angelieri published his edition from 1590. [xxvi], 1-572, 1-84 pp.
