Famous as a 'scandalmonger' in Scotland and America, James T. Callender (1758-1803) was a popular and controversial political pamphleteer and journalist, best known today for his newspaper articles alleging that Thomas Jefferson had children with Sally Hemings. After immigrating to the United States in 1793, Callender worked as a reporter for *The Philadelphia Gazette* and gained notoriety in the 1790s for exposing Alexander Hamilton's affair with Maria Reynolds, a married woman. He was imprisoned for nine months in 1800 under the Sedition Act, for remarks he had made against President John Adams. A nice copy of Callender's Philadelphia pamphlet on taxation, in which he opposes recently passed Congressional taxes on snuff and sugar.
