Zustand: Hervorragend. Zustand: Hervorragend | Seiten: 352 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | This textbook applies basic concepts of ecology to address critical issues regarding food and agricultural systems. The intended audience is first year undergraduate students; it may also benefit higher-level undergraduates with an interest in agriculture and ecology. The level of science and general knowledge reflects this target group. The text is divided into five sections with 22 chapters in all. Each chapter has its own student learning objectives. The first two sections, ¿Context of Agroecology¿ and ¿Basics of Agroecosystems,¿ provide a sound basis for the further study of agriculture from an ecological standpoint. Section 3, ¿Digging Deeper into Agroecosystems,¿ explores the related issues of hunger, wastes, climate change, and biodiversity. It is suggested that students study these three sections before proceeding to section 4 or 5. Section 4, ¿Application of Agroecosystem Concepts,¿ introduces students to agricultural production and challenges them to use the concepts and ideas from the first three sections to critically evaluate such production systems. Section 5, ¿Agroecosystem Management,¿ brings the coverage full circle by examining global solutions and opportunities from both a scientific and social economic standpoint. Particularly these last four chapters offer both food for thought and inspiration for further work. The book¿s goal is not to provide a comprehensive literature review; rather, it offers extensive data on and a stimulating analysis of the topic.

Roanoke College is a private liberal arts college in Salem, Virginia. It has approximately 2,000 students who represent approximately 40 states and 30 countries.[6] The college offers 35 majors, 57 minors and concentrations, and pre-professional programs. Roanoke awards bachelor's degrees in arts, science, and business administration and is one of 280 colleges with a chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. A boys' preparatory school was founded by Lutheran pastors David F. Bittle and Christopher C. Baughmann. Originally located in Augusta County near Staunton, the school was named Virginia Institute until chartered on January 30, 1845, as Virginia Collegiate Institute. In 1847, the institute moved to Salem which was developing into a center of commerce and transportation in the region; the school moved all of its possessions in a single covered wagon. The Virginia General Assembly granted a college charter on March 14, 1853 and approved the name Roanoke College, chosen in honor of the Roanoke Valley. Bittle then served as the college's first president. Roanoke was one of the few Southern colleges that remained open throughout the American Civil War. The student body was organized into a corps of cadets and fought with Confederate forces near Salem in December 1863. The students were outmatched and quickly forced to surrender, but the Union commander paroled them and allowed them to return to their studies. The college company was formally mustered into the Confederate Army, Virginia Reserves, on September 1, 1864, but the students did not see combat before the war ended. Roanoke enrolled its first international students in the late 19th century; the first Mexican student in 1876 and the first Japanese student in 1888. The first Korean to graduate from an American college or university, Surh Beung Kiu, graduated in 1898. Coeducation Roanoke became coeducational in 1930. A small number of non-degree-seeking women, mostly from Elizabeth College in Salem, were previously enrolled. Originally named Roanoke Women's College, Elizabeth was a sister Lutheran women's college destroyed by fire in 1921 and closed; the female students finished the 1921-22 academic year at Roanoke. Elizabethans are shown on page 70. Women [damsels of our fair Southland] are included in this 1921 The Roentgen Rays yearbook (Dixie's Own pages 132-135!). This is the Twenty-Second edition of The Roentgen Rays, Presumed first printing of this edition.

Land Snails of Belize, Central America is presented as a reference to both the biologist and citizen scientist alike. It was designed to provide information in a clear, concise and easy to understand manner that would aid in the identification of the land snails of Belize. The book includes a brief history of research in the region, status of current research, how to collect land snails, shell morphology, anatomy and terminology and species accounts with over 750 colour images and diagnostic features highlighted for each of the 158 species. The seventeen land snail species that are new to science are also described within. This book is the first of its kind for Belize and for Central America; bringing forward the research of early collectors like Eduard von Martens' work Biologia Centrali-Americana (1890-1901) and building on the more recent research of Fred Thompson's A Checklist and Bibliography of Land & Freshwater Mollusks of Mexico and Central America. 338 pp., approx. 750 color photos, color & b/w illustrations, color distribution maps, br. gr. 8 [17 x 24 cm].
