Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American short story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" (1819) and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". His "Old Christmas" is a charming collection of essays and tales, in which he describes the holiday traditions of England and how they were imported into the then-young United States. The ediiton for sale is part of the publisher's 'Pocket Classics' series, and is beautifully illustrated with drawings by Randolph Caldecott, engraved by J.D. Cooper. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling and designs on the front board and spine. Top edge gilt. The case of the book is in very good condition with a slight lean to the spine. The contents are tight and clean with light foxing to prelims and a previous owner's name to the front pastedown.
