Les trois premières sont rédigées par Voltaire qui donna une résonance nationale à cette affaire et lutta inlassablement pour la réhabilitation de Jean Calas. Dans le contexte de conflits religieux entre protestants et catholiques à Toulouse, Jean Calas avait été accusé à tort d'avoir assassiné son fils pour l'empêcher se convertir au catholicisme, condamné à mort et brûlé le 10 mars 1762.
