Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. First Edition. (no dust jacket, possibly as issued) [modest shelfwear, black mark along bottom edge of front cover, small pencil check-marks next to some catalog entries]. (B&W art reproductions) A nicely-produced catalogue of works by this Illinois-born painter and watercolorist (1868-1933), who was well-regarded in his day. The introduction, although stated on the title page as "by Holger Cahill," is largely comprised of Hart's own comments on his life and work, apparently derived from an interview, although the 17-page piece is edited in a strange way (without quotation marks to set off his words from the third-person observations of Cahill). This is followed by a "Catalogue of Prints," which lists 82 individual works, although only 24 are reproduced in the next and final section of the book, each on its own page. The limitation statement reads: "Of this edition, containing an original lithograph, 250 copies have been printed on Normandy vellum, specially bound, numbered and signed by the artist"; below this is written "#229 / Pop Hart / Holger Cahill." (The original lithograph, the book's frontispiece, is protected by a tissue guard, and is entitled "The Champion, Mexico, 1928"; it depicts the aftermath of a cockfight, with a group of spectators observing one bird picking at the corpse of the other.) Signed by Artist.

Pub Year 1928, See images for condition. About the book >.>.> George O. 'Pop' Hart is a visually engaging exploration of the artistic philosophies and practices of Pop Hart, articulated through a dialogue that reflects his views on storytelling in art. Hart posits that a picture holds the power to narrate a story when the viewer chooses to invest meaning into it. He expresses admiration for renowned artists?both religious and secular?who have successfully woven narratives into their work, including Giotto, Tintoretto, El Greco, Velasquez, Goya, and Renoir. In discussing the allure of human figures in art, Hart highlights his own preference for depicting crowds and lively scenes. Unlike other artists who gravitate towards more static subjects such as still life or landscapes, he finds vibrancy and storytelling potential within the complex interactions of people. His philosophy underscores a belief that the essence of art is rooted in passion, particularly his passion for humanity and the humour found in everyday situations, even those where he finds himself the punchline.By prioritising movement and colour amid human interactions, Hart reveals the core of his artistic vision. The book provides insight into his creative process, reflecting a lifetime of engagement with people as a source of inspiration. Through Hart?s lens, readers are invited to appreciate how art can transcend mere aesthetics to evoke narratives filled with emotion and connection.
