The 'Stella Polare' was originally a Norwegian vessel named Jason, but was sold to an Italian company and renamed for the prince and explorer Prince Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi to complete a polar expedition. During the expedition, the prince lost two fingers to frostbite and gave command of the vessel to Umberto Cagni.Written by Umberto Cagni (1863-1932), an Italian polar explorer and Navy admiral.From the library of Eric Kenneth Prentice Back. Kenn Back was a British meteorologist with the British Antarctic survey for many years. He spent eight winters in the Antarctic and is a descendent of Captain George Back. In addition, he served as base commander at Halley, Faraday and Rothera stations. His library collection was built over decades and highlights his love of polar exploration. In the publisher's original full cloth binging. Externally, gilt detail to the spine has rubbed away and there is slight spotting to the spine. Internally firmly bound, pages are bright and clean. Uniform binding, Title, author, volume, and ornament stamped on the spine in gilt. Half titles. Rubricated title pages. Printed on smooth semi-gloss paper. Deckled edges. Sewn in pocket at the back of volume II. Both volumes in similar condition: darkened heads, occasional pencil mark, no foxing, some cracking in the gutters of the end papers, strong binding. Covers are slightly rubbed, bumped and worn at the edges. Overall condition is good verging on very good if not for the missing map.

Prima edizione di questa celebre ed affascinante relazione che portò l'uomo a latitudini mai raggiunte precedentemente.
