Zustand: Good. 8vo (181x115 mm). [28], 104 pp. Woodcut ornament on the title page. Woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces. Contemporary stiff vellum, inked title on spine. Usual browning and foxing due to the quality of Neapolitan paper of the time, but a good, genuine copy. Rare first edition of the first vernacular translation of Girolamo Fracastoro's Sifilide sive morbus gallicus, first published in 1530. The translation is by Pietro Belli of Lecce and is followed by the original Latin text printed in italics. But this edition is particularly important above all because it includes a preface ?Al discreto Leggitore? (?To the Discerning Reader') by Giambattista Vico on scientific poetry beginning with Lucretius, as well as a dedication to Count Ernest von Harrach signed by Belli, though Vico himself is the true author behind it. In it, the Neapolitan philosopher, writing under Belli's name, quotes himself in a discourse on the natural law of nations, which is to be understood in every respect as an announcement and presentation of the second edition (1730) of his Scienza Nuova. Ernest was the son of Viceroy Ludwig von Harrach, to whom Vico had sent a petition in the very early months of 1731 on behalf of his son, then forwarded to Emperor Charles VI. ?Curiosamente, la dedica firmata dal Belli non parla di medicina, ma di diritto naturale; mentre sulla medicina si soffermerà, ed è qui la piccola rarità vichiana, la prefazione, in cui l'autore coglie la felice occasione offertagli dallo scritto di argomento medico per riprendere e in qualche modo allargare, sia pure molto brevemente, un nodo della ?fisica poetica' e della ?fisica poetica dell'uomo', su cui si è soffermato nella seconda edizione della Scienza nuova appena data alla luce [. . .] I due testi manifestano dunque fisionomie complementari. Quello posto sotto firma altrui è di fatto una presentazione dei più recenti sviluppi vichiani, mentre quello sotto firma propria entra, sia pure in forma stringata, nel tema fisico-medico, che propone in sintonia e coerenza con la propria attuale elaborazione [. . .] Dedicando ora la traduzione del Belli al figlio del vicerè, Vico ricorda come questi si dilettasse ?d'intorno a materie di diritto naturale delle nazioni' e come gli avesse gentilmente detto ?di averne in Roma veduto un di lui libro, che ne trattava; e sì gli diede l'ardire di presentarglielo il giorno appresso; ed Ella con grandezza d'animo gradinne il presente, ed onoronne l'Autore. Si tratta chiaramente non, come vorrebbe Croce, dell'edizione del 1725, che per Vico a quel punto è vecchia, ma dell'ultima appena sfornata, nel 1730 appena trascorso. Il collegamento fra due testi atipici, come sono la supplica al padre e la dedica mascherata al figlio, mette in evidenza più che l'avvilimento o il ripiegamento sul passato, lo slancio che Vico, pur in tutte le sue difficoltà materiali, sta vivendo in un momento per lui rigoglioso, il 1731, quando le scontentezze e le autocorrezioni cessano tutte ad un tratto e fanno posto solo a un grande fervore di miglioramenti e abbellimenti dell'opera, che culmina con un ?exegi monumentum aere perennius' stilato con emozione tangibile al termine del terzo e non ultimo dei suoi rifacimenti manoscritti [. . .] Nella prefazione [. . .] Vico comincia lo scritto soffermandosi, e la cosa è un po' d'obbligo nel presentare una traduzione, in elogi al traduttore con un excursus comparativo in cui richiama la traduzione virgiliana del Caro e poi quei poeti che sanno essere al tempo stesso ?toscani' e ?latini', come il Della Casa, il Bembo e il Sannazaro, non senza una punta critica verso il Marchetti che appare rivolta non tanto al traduttore, quanto al poeta tradotto, Lucrezio - e anche questo, in uno scritto ?diplomatico' che si presenta ad autorevoli uomini di chiesa, è un po' un passaggio obbligato. C'è un passaggio aereo dalle considerazioni sulla lingua poetica latina a quelle sulla medicina, poiché il latino è guardato come lingua ?tanto naturalmente. Book.…

Cum Privil'.Na Huis ten Bosch was het Huis ter Noot, aan de zuidzijde van de Bezuidenhoutseweg het meest opvallende gebouw aan de Bezuidenhoutseweg. Volgens oude verhalen was dit huis in de Middeleeuwen als kasteel gebouwd en dankte het zijn naam aan de moedige daad van een zekere ridder Geldolph de Kortenaer. De ridder had gravin Ada uit een belegerde woning gered en mocht zijn kasteel Huis ter Noot noemen. Er zijn nog twee van dit soort fraaie verhalen over het middeleeuwse huis, maar in werkelijkheid was het geen middeleeuws huis. Het werd pas in 1595 gebouwd in opdracht van Karel ter Noot. Van der Noot op dat moment kapitein van de lijfwacht van prins Maurits. Hij zou later gouverneur (commandant) van achtereenvolgens Oostende en Sluis worden. Daar had ons land (het was de Tachtigjarige Oorlog) garnizoenen liggen.Karel ter Noot had een ouderwetse geest of hij ging om een andere reden niet met zijn tijd mee, want hij liet zijn nieuwe huis een kasteelachtig uiterlijk geven. Veel huizen in Den Haag zagen er nog kasteelachtig uit, maar die raakten langzamerhand juist uit de gratie. Ze werden afgebroken en vervangen door een kleinere en moderner ingerichte woning. Een middeleeuwse woning stond niet als huis aan de straat, want aan de straat stond een muur met een poort. Door de poort kwam je op een binnenhof en daar lag de woning dan aan, samen met enkele bijgebouwen. Raadpensionaris Johan van Oldenbarnevelt kocht zo'n ouderwets wooncomplex, liet het slopen en vervangen door een moderner ogendhuis waarvan de voorgevel deels nog aan de Kneuterdijk staat. Het huis van Johan de Witt aan de Kneuterdijk had ook zo'n middeleeuwse voorganger. Karel ter Noot's huis werd ook wel 'hofstede' genoemd, een aristocratisch lijkend wooncomplex en misschien ook zijn bedoeling. The Treveszaal in The Hague [de Treveszaal in Den Haag], in the Binnenhof. This astonishingly beautiful room was originally erected for the negotiations during the Eighty Years' War. (4)-92 pagine numerate; 17 (su 18) spelndide tavole incise fuori testo e colorate all`acquarello d`epoca con qualche sapiente rialzo \"à la gomme\". Manca la tavola n. 1 (è la seconda del`Mackarel`, di Eleazar Albin datata 1735). Le magnifiche tavole calcografiche colorate a mano raffiguranti pesci sia di mare che di fiume furono realizzate da disegni dalla famiglia di disegnatori Albin (Eleazer, Elizabeth and Fortin). Il più noto fu Eleazar Albin (Weiss), un pittore natio della Germania e stabilitosi in Inghilterra dal 1707 dove cambiò il suo nome da Weiss a Albin. Ha illustrato opere su insetti e ragni, guadagnandosi la vita dipingendo acquarelli naturalistici per ricchi committenti, quale Sir Hans Sloane, la cui collezione ha fondato il British Museum. L`opera in esamefu pubblicata per la prima volta da Edmund Curll nel 1713. Un`edizione precedente con le tavole di Albin (in bianco e nero) apparve nel 1794 con il titolo The History of Esculent Fish. With an essay on the breeding of fish and construction of fish ponds, by Roger North. Le tavole stesse furono originariamente prodotte per Icones piscium di Albin (Londra, 1735-41). North`s treatise was first published by Edmund Curll in 1713. An earlier issue with Albin`s plates appeared in 1794 under the title The History of Esculent Fish. With an essay on the breeding of fish and construction of fish ponds, by Roger North. The plates themselves were originally produced for Albin`s Icones piscium (London, 1735-41).
