Soft cover. Zustand: As New. Contents: Acknowledgements. Introduction. Translations. Map. Works Cited and Selected Bibliography for Further Reading. Dalit Literature has arrived in Tamil, and it has come of age. Until the past twenty or thirty years, Dalit people in India, traditionally the recipients of some of India's worst discrimination and oppression, did not have much of a literary voice. Now, however, there are voices representing millions of ? Dalits-people who certainly do speak for themselves, but many of whom cannot write for themselves, and would not be published if they did. Further, as Bama says everyone now acknowledges that for the past few years Dalit writings have had an enormous impact on society. Clearly, the issues raised by Dalit voices do matter, on both a national and an international stage. Some of those voices, translated from Tamil into English, are contained in this volume, along with an extensive introduction. Each of the nine Dalit authors collected here has contributed an essay on his or her own experience as a Dalit writer; seven of them also contributed previously unpublished short stories or poems. Their works often display an in-your-face character, but there are also subtle nuances and carefully drawn characters and situations. Dalit literature is fresh and new, and old and stale, all at the same time. It arises directly out of lived experiences in an unjust world. A Dalit writer has to have firm convictions, and critique society through his creations, and be must not sell out to the powers that be. Dalit literature is not for the ladies and the gentlemen of this world. In the Tamil context, the moment a writer thinks be is free to be himself, he is arrested. And when he raises his voice against his arrest, he is strangled. When he expresses his anger, his eyes are plucked out. And when he runs away form this situation, his legs are broken. They haul out, from some old forgotten files, a place where he said he has a determined heart, and then they stab him right in his heart. But there is not really much use in doing that, since it's so easy to stab a crippled heart. Amongst these atrocities and struggles, the voice of the descendents of the drawn-and-quartered ecboes everywhere in vengeance. The Dalit writer who travels down the paths carved out by these echoes is undertaking a journey on which he expects to face challenges.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. A Most Noble Life is the extraordinary story of Ashrafunnisa Begum, who was born in an obscure village in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, taught herself to read and write, in secret, against the wishes of her elders and prevailing norms, and went on to teach and inspire generations of young girls at the Victoria Girls' Schoolthe first school for girls in Lahore. Her unusual life was written about with great poignancy by Muhammadi Begumthe first woman to edit a journal in Urdu, and a prolific writer of fiction and poetry for adults and children, and instructional books for women during her brief life. She aptly titled the biography Hayat-e Ashraf: it echoes the name of her subject, but also means 'the noblest life'. The two women, who met by chance at a wedding, instantly developed a strong mutual affinity, which grew into a lifelong bond. In Ashrafunnisa Begum, Muhammadi Begum saw not only the mother she had lost as a child, but also an inspiring role model who had led a principled life of her own making, and shown amazing grace and strength against grave odds. This is the first complete English translation of Hayat-e Ashraf (1904). The translator, a longtime scholar of Urdu literature and culture, also provides the first detailed study of the life and works of its author, Muhammadi Begum, and highlights in an 'Afterword' two key social issues of the time, women's literacy and widow remarriage, which remain as relevant today. An absorbing narrative, observant, witty and poignant, lovingly translated and annotated by C. M. Naim, it affords us precious and candid glimpses of ordinary Muslim women in the nineteenth century who, unknown to themselves, led less than ordinary lives.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. Sky blue cloth hardback book, with lovely gilt ship design on front board, and gilt title impressions on the spine. Comes with nice, clean dust jacket. The book is in really good condition, normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. A few speckles of foxing to top of endpapers. 417 pages all intact, all pages, text, maps and illustrations are in really good, clean, readable order. Pen signature on first blank page. Printed in Great Britain, by The University Press, Cambridge. Jeronimo Lobo was the last survivor of the small band of Jesuit Fathers who tried, with a measure of success, to reconcile Ethiopia to the Church of Rome. His life was long and adventurous. Chosen to serve in India when still a novice, he was ordained with extreme haste and embarked on a ship which was forced to turn back in the Gulf of Guinea. He reached India in the next year after being involved in a naval fight against the Dutch and English off Mozambique. He was selected from for the Ethiopian mission and made a remarkable attempt to reach the country from the Somali Coast. After his unsurprising failure in this he returned to India and eventually made his way to Bailul in the Red Sea and across the Danakil desert. He spent nine years in Ethiopia, part of the time in the neighbourhood of the source of the Blue Nile. Exiled when the Emperor restored the authority of the Ethiopian Church, he was among these handed over to the Turks at Massawa. after suffering much hardship and danger he regained India. Sent to Europe on a confidential mission to advocate military intervention on behalf of the Ethiopian Catholics, his ship was wrecked on the South African Coast. The castaways built two boats, one which improbably succeeded in rounding the Cape and arriving at Luanda in Angola. Here he embarked on a ship carrying slaves to the Spanish main. It was captured by the Dutch and Lobo was marooned on an island but contrived to make his way to Cartagena and Havana and so to Europe. His diplomatic business took him to Madrid and Rome, but his plea for armed assistance did not succeed. In 1640 he again went to India where he was at times in serious conflict with the secular authorities; he was accused of Spanish sympathies and was confined in a Franciscan convent for a time. He returned to Portugal in 1657. In his last years he was in touch with Robert Southwell and corresponded with the Royal Society of London, which published an English translation of some tractates which he wrote, probably in response to specific questions submitted to him on the Society's behalf. lobo's account of his travels was not printed during his lifetime. A French translation appeared in 1728 and this was translated into English by Dr. Johnson and published in 1735. A fascinating insight into a man with a mission and the period of which many changes were taking place.
