Directed to the doughty controversialist George Anthony Denison (1805-1898). -- 'The office, as the Rubric directs, is to be read over all with the exception of those, that "die unbaptized," or "excommunicate," or "have laid violent hands upon themselves." Here lies the grievance…, or rather hence it arises.' (p. 4) -- 'I have pledged myself to the Formularies as they are: to the Formularies as some would have them, I could not pledge myself.' (p. 9) -- 'For the restoration of this Godly Discipline two courses are open: either (1) to use the means, that are ready to hand, and which are to be found, as you yourself have pointed out, in 53 George III. c. 127, and 2 and 3 William IV. c. 93, and in Canons CIX., CXIII.; or (2) if this machinery be thought too cumbrous and expensive, or otherwise objectionable, as it really is, to apply to Convocation to provide, and Parliament to sanction, other, which may be considered simpler and better. One thing at least is plain. To memorialise Convocation to entertain the question of the Restoration of Discipline, and thereby to use its endeavour to bring up the world to the level of the Church, is worthy of a minister or a layman of the Church: to memorialise Convocation to alter the Prayer Book as proposed, and thereby to use its endeavour to bring down the Church to the level of the world, is not worthy of a minister or layman of the Church.' (p. 22).
