Material and methods. 6. Key characters. 7. Descriptions. Checklist of echinoderms of India. References. From the general introduction: The Ehin…odermata is one of the best characterized and most distinct phyla of animal kingdom Bather, 1900. The echinoderms being common and conspicuous marine animals have been known since ancient times. They are found at every ocean depth from the intertidal zone to the abyssal zone. The first definitive members of the phylum appeared near the start of the Cambrian period. The echinoderms are important both biologically and geologically: biologically because few other groupings are so abundant in the biotic desert of the deep sea, as well as the shallower oceans, and geologically as their ossified skeletons are major contributors to many limestone formations, and can provide valuable clues as to the geological environment.

However, it remains unexplored as only 0.0001% of biodiversity documented from this extreme environment. India is endowed with 2.02 million s.km. area of exclusive economic zone in marine area, of which 60 percent falling under deep sea i.e. above 200 m deep. Zoological Survey of India made a pioneer studies in Indian seas through the oceanographic expeditions of RIMS investigator since from 1874 to 1926. The book provides the consolidated information of deep sea fauna dealing 4371 faunal species based on the data collected over the period of more than 100 years. (Jacket).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Telangana state is located in the centre of the Deccan plateau and western part of Eastern Ghats. It has varied agro climatic and biogeographic features from plain to rocky terrain and hills. It has widely different type of forest which covers around 26,969.48 sq.km of geographical area, which includes 1…2 protected areas of the state. This state is also endowed with rich floral and faunal diversity. Current publication reports about 2450 faunal species from the state. Among these 1744 species are invertebrates and 706 are vertebrates. A total of 68 faunal species are endemic to the state. Phylum Arthropoda has highest number of species, comprising 52% species of the entire state fauna. Amrabad and Kawal Tiger Reserves are hot spots of fauna in the state. The current work provides baseline information on faunal diversity of the state, which could help in preparation of strategies for better management and conservation of biodiversity of the state. However, still the faunal documentation of each protected areas and ecosensitive zones needs to be assessed and which could provide more and accurate number of species of the state.

From the introduction: Corals are mostly sessile animals belonging to the phylum Cnidaria under the class Anthozoa. The formation of colonial structure by the c…orals during the course of development is known as coral reefs. Corals are known to represent simple structural plan of anatomony with an opening i.e. mouth while the individual animal is termed as polyp. Mouth of the each polyp is bounded by tentacles which harbor the stinging cells i.e. nematocysts. The nematocysts help the corals for capturing is prey from oceanic waters. The namatocysts also worked as defence organs for the cnidarians. Corals usually capture plankton by its tentacles. Depostion of plankton is taken place inside the mouth while the food material is digested inside the cavity during its movement and absorption of the nutrient is take place thereafter. During the process of development, older polyps used to die and those are replaced by the formation of new polyps. After the death process, old structural architecture of coral used to work as reef and provide space for the formation of new corals.
