In illustrated and decorated green cloth boards with gilt titles and extensive decorations, tipped in illustration on front panel. Boards a little rubbed and rounded at spine tips and extreme corners, remarkably bright and fresh. Front free endpaper absent, and old water damage affecting the base of the half-title page and frontispiece, (not affecting text or image), frontispiece rubbed along fore-edge, else internally neat, clean, and tight with just a hint of spotting on a few early and late pages. In its original dust jacket, with tipped on illustration matching that on the book (jacket is rubbed and lightly chipped at edges and folds, with minor loss at spine ends, short flat tear running from spine head along fold). Dust jacket now protected in a Brodart-style sleeve, fitted without the use of tape or adhesives. A little boy dreams of adventures with his hobby horse and finds a house full of cats. Small splits neatly stuck at tail of spine, slight wear and tiny splits at head of spine, corners slightly rubbed, a horrid child has scraped the face of Towlocks on the upper cover with the point of a compass or some such (this plate repeated inside), neat inscription on blank leaf before half-title, contents otherwise bright and clean. A very good copy. First published in the Dumpy series by Grant Richards in 1903. When Grant Richards filed for bankruptcy in 1905, the publishing rights to the Dumpy books were sold to Chatto and Windus who reissued this title in their Sambo series, our title being No. 9. Gold address label to top margin of front pastedown (which is also the frontis - but it is in the margin so picture not affected). Prize plate neatly inserted at inner margin of title-page. Grubby fingermarks and pale page browning to contents. Neat list of illustrator names written in pencil to verso of title-page. Packaged with care and promptly dispatched!
