Perkins, a well-known American legal writer and editor adapted the text for use in the United States by incorporating relevant American caselaw. The previous owner may well be Samuel Baker Woods (1856-1952), the celebrated Virginia lawyer and businessman who became the first Mayor of Charlottesville, Virginia. His papers are held by the University of Virginia.
