About the book >.>.> ALTHOUGH the most popular medieval sculpture of Exeter Cathedral is no doubt the Minstrels' Gallery, with its angel…s carrying divers musical instruments, they are, as far as quality of workmanship and power of expression go, by no means the best the Cathedral has to show. The corbels and roof bosses are lovelier in form and, here and there, also in emotional content, and they are infinitely less known. This is why the following plates concentrate on them. Roof bosses are keystones of vaulting, and except in the earliest times, they were carved with various designs. In some early examples, Norman as well as early Gothic, the only carving on the keystone was a continuation of the mouldings of the vaulting ribs, so that these appeared to intersect at the centre of the boss; but such examples are comparatively rare. When the Gothic style was really established, the fashion of carving roof bosses was universal in this country. And the way they were carved here was distinctive. Abroad, the ear.
