Vanaf de negentiende eeuw worden de veranderingen in het zelfbeeld geïllustreerd aan de opvattingen van een aantal grote auteurs in de menswetenschappen. Het boek gaat over het beeld dat de mens van zichzelf heeft, zoals dat duidelijk wordt bij filosofen, en in latere tijd bij psychologen en sociologen. In het westen is dit zelfbeeld steeds schraler geworden. Een voordeel van die verschraling is dat de mens op een beperkt gebied steeds meer kon presteren. Een nadeel is dat veel levensgebieden' onbespreekbaar zijn geworden. Toch bestond er naast de dominante wijsgerige stroming steeds een min of meer verborgen, soms zelfs nauwelijks getolereerde onderstroom. In onze tijd is er onder academici aan de Amerikaanse westkust een doorbraak te constateren; ook de aspecten van de mens waarmee men in het westen eeuwenlang geen raad wist, komen bij hen weer in de belangstelling. In dit boek worden eveneens de historische, 'verborgen' onderstroom en de nieuwe impulsen in onze tijd besproken, evenals de consequenties daarvan voor de sociale wetenschappen, met name voor de criminologie. C.I. Dessaur studeerde na haar gymnasiumopleiding filosofie te Amsterdam en Leiden. In 1971 promoveerde zij cum laude op Foundations of Theory-Formation in Criminology. Nadat zij hoofd van een wetenschappelijk stafbureau Ministerie van CRM was geweest, werd zij wetenschappelijk (hoofd) medewerker bij het Criminologisch Instituut aan de R.U. te Leiden. Na een simplificatie-proces van drieduizend jaar zijn we beland bij een materialistisch-monistische visie op de mens. Wat ons rest, aldus Ronnie Dessaur, is 'de mens als louter materie met wat psychische epifenomenen'. Daarom boeken de sociale wetenschappen nauwelijks vooruitgang, omdat de basisassumpties niet kloppen. Ze gaan uit van de zintuiglijk waarneembare buitenwereld en de mens als psycho-fysische eenheid. Vergeleken bij de oude Indische leringen zijn de mensbeelden van Plato en Aristoteles al beperkt en versimpeld. We zijn met het verlies van de multi-dimensionale mens veel kennis kwijtgeraakt, aldus Dessaur (1931-2002). Wat afnam is het op wetenschappelijk aanvaardbare wijze reflecteren over de zin van het leven, over goed en kwaad en over wat de hoogste individuele doeleinden en sociale idealen zouden moeten zijn. Als hoogleraar criminologie vond ze dat er geen statischer mensbeeld was dan dat in de criminologie. In de leer der misdaad zijn onderzoekers op zoek naar clusters van oorzaken voor criminaliteit en vooral op zoek naar verschillen. Dessaur merkt haarfijn op dat de biologische wetenschap al ten tijde van Linnaeus (1707-1778) toe was aan het constateren van verschillen.
