Original Kupferstich aus Johannes Stradanus's Werk: "Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium, Pugnae Bestiariorum: & Mutuae Bestiarum". || Size of image: ca. 19,5 x 26 cm. -- This remarkable engraving is from Johannes Stradanus's (or Jan van der Straet) "Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium, Pugnae Bestiariorum: & Mutuae Bestiarum". The work was originally published in 1578. This engraving comes from a later edition (c.1800) and was printed from the original plate from the 16th century. "The engravers of this fine work are Jean Collaert, Charles de Mallery, Corneille Galle, Théodore Galle, Adrien Collaert." (Menessier de la Lance, Essai de Bibliographie hippique, p. 583). The work featured elaborate engravings of hunting scenes including mammals, birds, and fish. While the engravings focus on the sport of hunting, it shows details of the weapons, architecture, and fashion of the late 16th century. The plates featured lions, tigers, elephants, bulls, bears, camels, unicorns, stags, satyrs, dragons, porcupines and monkeys. Johannes Stradanus or Jan van der Straet (1523-1605) was a Flemish artist that mainly worked in Florence, Italy. He was greatly talented and worked on easel, as a fresco painter, tapestry designer, draughtsman, engraver, and pottery decorator. El autor, nieto de Hernán Mexia, siguió los pasos de éste y fue cronista de linajes coloniales, iniciando la publicación de su obra en Lima en 1621 lo que le llevaría a un proceso inquisitorial que duró hasta 1626 y a la prohibición de la misma, por lo que quedaría inconclusa. Se le considera uno de los mayores falsificadores de genealogías, con una habilidad tal que lograba enlazar los ascendientes directos de muchos "ricoshombres" americanos con los árboles de las más antiguas familias españolas, lo que si por un lado le proporcionaba sustanciosos ingresos, por otro provocaba la ira de los que quedaban excluídos de sus eruditos manejos, quienes se encargaron de informar al Santo Oficio, que ordenó la destrucción de los ejemplares de la única, hasta la presente, edición limeña.
