From the publisher : Talcott Parsons was a pivotal figure in the development of sociology in the United States from the 1930s to the 1960s. But the role of founding father to an objective social science is not one that Parsons deserves, according to Buxton. In fact, he suggests that Parsons's motives were rooted not in the pursuit of social-scientific truth but in the production of knowledge useful to the operation of the American state. Buxton traces parallels between the categories of social-scientific practice that Parsons proposed and the problems of 'instrumentation' and 'legitimation' faced by the American state. He argues that these parallels did not occur independently of each other, that in fact the direction of Parsons's work was determined by those problems and his intention that sociology be structured to address them. The legacy of Parsons was later reflected in the development of political sociology in the work of Lipset, Almond, and others. Their approach sought to contribute to a global process of modernization. Based on Parsonsian precepts, its acceptance lasted until the 1960s. Buxton's view of Talcott Parsons and his work is carefully argued and impressively documented. It will spark much controversy about social science and its nature, history, and practice.
