Signed by the author, renowned man of letters Guy Butler, on the title page. 8vo; green boards, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. (xiv) + 275 + maps; illustrations. Dustwrapper very slightly rubbed; felt pen mark covering earlier name or inscription to front pastedown; trace of foxing to edges and endpapers.…Good to very good condition. 'The adventures and experiences here told occurred in South Africa before 1875, and when the narrators were under 21. They are taken from diaries, letters, journals and memoirs, many not previously published or not readily available. 'The purpose of this collection is to take a fresh look at the British tradition in our country; for a change, to pass over the commentaries of men and women who arrived here as mature and formed characters; to look, instead, at Africa as it appeared through the eyes of the impressionable under-twenties: those whom Africa was to shape, and who were to shape Africa.' 4to; original boards; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper facsimiles; pp. (vi) + 366, incl. index; liberally illustrated with contemporary pictures. Dustwrapper somewhat rubbed and edgeworn, with trace of foxing to reverse side; some shelf wear; spine a little cocked; gift inscription to front free endpaper verso; moderate, scattere…d foxing. Good condition. "During the first half of 1820 twenty-one British transports under command of the Navy were making their way across the Atlantic, engaged in an unusual, if not unique, mission. They were not about their usual business of moving troops. They were transporting some four thousand individuals, from various parts of the British Isles, to an area vaguely defined as South-east Africa. This book, devised and written by a team of acknowledged authorities on the history of English-speaking South Africa, recounts the sometimes dramatic history of this large group of settlers. Chapters are of two kinds, attempting rather different things: first, those which aim to keep the reader aware of the larger social and historical context of which the 1820 Settlement is part; second, accounts of the struggles of the Settlers themselves, viewed at close quarters, and using their own words where possible. The value of the text is greatly enhanced by nearly 350 illustrations, many of which have not been published before. These have been chosen from contemporary sources, or from photographs of relics or buildings which have survived. The captions do more than describe the pictures; they provide important information not in the text itself. This book is a fitting tribute to the 1820 Settlers and the very important role they came to play in their new country.".
