In den WarenkorbSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight damage to the blank reverse of the second leaf from mount. Folded three times, with a short closed tear at the edge of one crease. The recipient is named by Bute as 'A. Milne Esq' (the Aberdeen merchant Alexander Milne of Crimonmogate?). The letter is signed 'Bute'. He writes that he had 'two objects in calling upon you yesterday: one to shew you the actual opinions which Mr Richards had sent me from Mr Knight & Mr Campbell, & to mention what had passed between Mr Roy & me on the subject that morning', with the last advising Bute to 'send them in an authentic shape, instead of embodying them in a letter'. He is sending Milne 'an official letter, with copies of the opinions subjoined', asking him to return it at once, 'if upon reading the opinions you think Mr Roy was wrong in his advice'. He also wishes to give Milne the 'satisfactory intelligence' that he has got possession of 'an original case, with the opinion of Mr Cruse upon it, which was laid before him by desire of Lord Guilford in May 1816; this case contains a complete abstract of the title to all the family estates from the occasion of Lord North's marriage to the date of the case'. He now hopes to be able 'to put a stop to Mr Walford's no less tedious than expensive labours; the case was prepared by Sir James Graham's house; I have directed Mr Roy to come to you, after seeing Mr Christie'.…

In den WarenkorbBoth letters, 4pp., 12mo, bifoliums, very good condition. Letter One (30 Nov. 1887): "On carefully re-considering the article you were so good as to send me, I thought it would be better to write a new one, which I now send you. [.] I think it gives a fair idea on the whole, to an outsider, of what the Breviary [which he had translated] is in practise - and I should prefer to leave to you the task of abridging it. Only I would ask you to let me know how you purpose to do so. I have myself marked in pencil some passages which seem to me the less important, but without meaning to control your judgment. I also take the linberty of sending you herewith a little book, which contains nearly everything (except, of course, the changeable prayers & lessons) that is in ordinary use from day to day. If you have time to look over it, and especially to read the Preface & final notes, you will gain a very accurate impression of what the daily office means. | I presume you did not want any analysis of the Kalendar or specimen of the directions in the Ordo Recitandi [phrase underlined][Postscript follows} It occurs to me as possible that by inserting what I have written, you may obviate the necessity of a separate article upon the Canonical Hours [phrase underlined], or, at any rate, be able to reduce it to very small proportions." Letter Two (12 Aug. 1892): "I am much obliged by your letter, and should be very glad to write the article in question. I sometime ago studied the subject so much, and made so many notes upon it, that I hope I might be able to do so satisfactorily to you. | My notes however are all at Mount Stuart, and so are all the books of reference to which they refer. I should be obliged therefore, if you would let me know the very latest date at which you must have the M.S. | I have at this moment on hand, besides some other work, the compilation of a speech upon the history of Wales, which I am to deliver at Rhyl before the National Eisteddford on Sept.7". He then details all the obligations of the next few weeks (speech at the "triennial music festivals" in Cardiff, "lecture upon the materials for the history of Llewellyn ap Gryffuyd which I purpose to deliver as my inaugural address as President of the Cymmrodorion Society in London", sit for his portrait as Mayor for Cardiff Town (Herkomer), work for the Universities Commission, as well as multiple tasks when he can eventually go to Mount Stuart.…

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, one of 185 copies only, this numbered 21 on the limitation slip mounted on the front pastedown. This is perhaps the earliest English cookbook devoted solely to Arab cuisine, with detailed instructions for some 80 dishes. No copies are found institutionally. "The first purpose of this book is to provide, for those Europeans who wish to make Moroccan dishes, the recipes in the most approved and classical manner of Moroccan cooking. How many dishes may be of purely Mauretanian origin it would be hazardous to suggest. Some of them are know to have come from East, among which is the pastry called Treed, which History records as far away as Mecca. It can scarcely be thought rash to surmise this dish to have been introduced into Morocco in the time of Mulai Idris, descendant of the Prophet Mohammed, who fled to Morocco and whose body lies at Fez, the land of his exile. It was he who brought to the West the Mohammedan religion, and may not the faithful Fatima have brought to the Moors the recipe for Treed?" (Foreword). Harrow educated John Crichton-Stuart (1881-1947) succeeded his father as marquess of Bute at the age of 19, becoming one of the richest men in Britain. He also inherited his father's love of architecture, undertaking a number of important restoration projects, among them Caerphilly Castle in Wales and Robert Adam's north side of Charlotte Square in Edinburgh. An avid collector of art, silver, stamps and coins, he also developed a passion for the history and culture of; Morocco he was silent partner in Rentistica, the largest real estate business in Tangier, proprietor of the English language newspaper, The Tangier Gazette, and established the famed El Minzah hotel. The book was published posthumously, and the editorial note acknowledges Bute's indebtedness to the El Menebhi family, "who made the collection of these recipes possible by giving him every facility to study the methods of Moorish cooking in their Tangier home". Octavo. 21 attractive vignettes to the text from pen and ink drawings signed Mangin, foreword, contents, and list of condiments - spices - given in English and Arabic. Marquess of Bute's cmpliments slip loosely inserted. Original moderate green buckram, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. A little rubbed, a couple of splash marks to the boards, free endpapers browned, very occasional spots of foxing to the page edges, overall very good.…
