Haar vader, geboren in 1928, zat als kind in het Jappenkamp en heeft dat heel bewust meegemaakt. Eind jaren tachtig ging Bussemaker met haar vader naar Indonesi? om de verhalen van zijn jeugd en de oorlog te horen. In 2007 werd zij benoemd tot staatssecretaris VWS en werd zij politiek verantwoordelijk voor de zorg voor oorlogsgetroffenen. ?De distantie die doorgaans van een bewindspersoon wordt verwacht, was nu opeens niet meer zo vanzelfsprekend,? schrijft zij. ?De oorlog kwam gevaarlijk dichtbij.? Bussemaker schrijft in Dochter van een kampkind een gelaagd verhaal. Over de oorlog in Nederlands-Indi? door de ogen van een twaalfjarige jongen in een kamp nadat hij zijn vader had verloren in de strijd tegen de Japanners. Over zichzelf als dochter die in opstand kwam tegen de koloniale geschiedenis. Over het beleidsperspectief dat zij als staatssecretaris formuleerde. En over de nog altijd grote gevoeligheid van het onderwerp. ?Goed?, en ?fout? blijken geen eenduidige begrippen maar eerder een wisseling van perspectief. Politicologe Jet Bussemaker is voormalig staatssecretaris Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport. Momenteel is zij lid van het College van Bestuur van de Universiteit van Amsterdam en de Hogeschool van Amsterdam, kroonlid van de Sociaal Economische Raad en bestuurslid van Het Indisch Herinneringscentrum Bronbeek. Eerder schreef zij onder meer Leven na paars? Linkse visies op de derde weg (met Rick van der Ploeg), Zielig zijn we niet en Betwiste Zelfstandigheid.; Krabbel met pen op de titelpagina.
