"Nero cellotex" is a… cycle of 10 paintings by Italian matterist painter Alberto Burri, which he considered "among the most important testimonies to his artistic will". Cellotex, a "poor, indestructible" material consisting of glue and particleboard, was essential to postwar building reconstruction. The painting cycle sees Burri's most elemental use of this material. Near indiscernible shelfwear to book, pages bright and crisp. Scarce edition in excellent condition.

Alberto Burri (Città di Castello, 1915 - Nizza, 1995), è stato uno dei più importanti artisti italiani del dopoguerra. Laureato in medicina, durante la seconda guerra mond…iale fu chirurgo militare in Africa. Nel 1944 trascorse un periodo di prigionia in un campo di ufficiali italiani del Texas, dove scopri la pittura, dapprima come svago, poi come passione. Tornato in Italia nel 1946, decise di rinunciare alla professione medica per dedicarsi interamente all'attività artistica. Tra il 1946 e il 1948 compose quadri figurativi, per passare poi, con i Catrami e le Muffe, a composizioni astratte nelle quali già il problema della materia si faceva urgente. Tra il 1950 e il 1955 apparvero i famosi Sacchi, nei quali la tela grezza del sacco, cucita, lacerata o bruciata, formava insieme l'oggetto e il soggetto dell'opera, la sua concreta sostanza e il suo significato. Alle tele si sono sostituiti i Legni, dal 1955, e i Ferri dal 1958. Negli anni Sessanta è stata la volta delle combustioni plastiche.Fra le sue mostre più importanti si ricordano le diverse partecipazioni alla Biennale di Venezia; alla Triennale di Milano; a Documenta; alla Biennale di San Paolo; la mostra antologica del 1996 al Palazzo delle Esposizioni di Roma; la mostra alle Scuderie del Quirinale nel 2005, decimo anniversario della morte, ed infine la retrospettiva al Solomon R. This monograph, published on the occasion of Art Basel 2018, presents the genesis, critical analysis, and exhibition history of the Combustioni Plastiche [Plastic Combustions] cycle by Alberto Burri. These work…s span a quarter of a century, from 1953 to 1979, and were created using industrial sheets of different kinds of plastic, with different melting points. They are visceral and technically innovative hybrids, part painting and part sculpture, ranging in size from a few centimetres to larger works installed in places of worship and stage designs for theatre performances. They illuminate Burri's longstanding exploration of the beauty that can be found in mass produced materials, and function as a lens through which we can reassess Burri's entire creative career.
