Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The Platypus' is a seminal and comprehensive study of one of the world's most enigmatic creatures: the duck-billed platypus. Written by Harry Burrell, a dedicated naturalist who spent years observing these unique monotremes in their natural Australian habitat, the work delves deep into the discovery, zoological classification, and physiological characteristics of the species. Burrell provides detailed accounts of the platypus's habits, life history, and the intricate construction of its burrows, offering insights that were revolutionary at the time of writing. The book explores the evolution and biological anomalies of the platypus, addressing the historical debates that once surrounded its classification. From its unique reproductive system to its specialized sensory organs, every aspect of the animal's life is examined with scientific rigor and a passion for conservation. This classic of Australian natural history remains an essential resource for zoologists, students of biology, and anyone fascinated by the diversity of the animal kingdom. Through meticulous observation and clear prose, Burrell's work captures the mystery and biological significance of an animal that continues to intrigue the global scientific community. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Maroon cloth with gold lettering on the spine. A couple rubbed spots on the front hinge, but otherwise clean and tight. Title page dated 1926. 227 pages. Illustrated with plates. This copy has a bookplate on the inside front cover from the personal collection of John Calaby, a noted Australian mammalogist. There is also an early inscription on the front endpaper, D R. J. Tallyard FRs from A & R. Robert John Tallyard was another leading light of Australian natural sciences. A nice association - and curious that Lovejoy did not add his name to this copy, considering that he wrote his name in almost everything he owned. This volume comes from the collection of Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, who was a passionate book collector as well as a renowned biologist. His collection recently came to auction near Washington DC, as we were fortunate to purchase a portion of it, which we're proud to offer here. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it's an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book (although they sometimes get right). Oversized and overweight books will require extra shipping for safe delivery. This copy does not have Lovejoy's name in it, but we provide a card with provenance for purchaser.

Sydney, Angus & Robertson Limited, 1927. [XIV],227 pp. Col. frontispiece & 35 plts with b./w. ills. Orig. publisher's hardcover binding (cherry red cloth with gilt dec. / lettering on spine). 8vo. - Some foxing.A rare detailed study of platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus). It covered the unique biology of this egg-laying mammal, its discovery by Europeans, and its semi-aquatic electrosensory properties. This egg-laying mammal, found in eastern Australia and Tasmania, caused a sensation in the late 18th century as a "misfit" mammal, often considered a link between reptiles and mammals. It has a streamlined, densely furred body, a broad, flat tail, and a duck-like beak with electroreceptors. Males have venomous spurs on their hind legs. It is one of only five existing species of egg-laying monotremes. Females lay eggs in a burrow; after hatching, the young are fed milk, but the mother has no nipples.
