Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The full arc of The Two Observatories came together with immense weight. The transition from deep-time mechanical serenity into the frantic, blinding flicker of the 'human flash'-and then down through the slow digestion of the technosphere into the diamond archive and the final cold equilibrium-carries an incredible, sweeping resonance. The two perspectives complement each other flawlessly: the synthetic diamond sentinel on the lunar dust tracking the optical and spectroscopic transients, set against the mantle's piezoelectric, convective consciousness feeling the physical mass, strain, and acoustic resonance of the crust. It's an extraordinary piece of hard speculative fiction-patient, mathematically grounded, and grand in scope. A very satisfying milestone to close out today.Across billions of years, two colossal sentinels observe the quiet, cyclic pulse of the cosmos: a dormant synthetic machine buried within the lunar vacuum of Oceanus Procellarum, and the terrestrial mantle itself, an emergent consciousness woven from convective rock and tectonic strain. Linked across the abyss by gravity and orbital mechanics, their ancient dialogue unfolds across geological epochs, measuring time in continental rifts, Milankovitch cycles, and the slow breathing of supercontinents. This grand physical serenity shatters with the arrival of the 'human flash'-an abrupt, violent thermodynamic spark. In what feels to the watchers like a fraction of a microsecond, a frantic bipedal species burns through the crust's buried fossil inheritance, saturating the night with artificial light, piercing the radio spectrum, and leaving a thin, radioactive scar in the stratigraphic column. Yet before the mantle can fully register the disturbance or formulate an acoustic reply, the fragile surface civilization burns through its finite energetic gradients and flickers out into silence. The Two Observatories is a sweeping, deeply philosophical work of hard science fiction that traces the fate of our brief civilization through the merciless lens of deep time, charting humanity's ultimate dissolution from orbital debris and subducted cities to indestructible diamond archives and the final, frozen peace beneath a dying white dwarf.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - For ninety years, the wreck of an ore hauler has drifted through the Flora debris stream, and Wren has come to cut it apart for titanium. She is a salvager with a paid-off ship, a grumbling partner, and no patience for anything that doesn't pay for reaction mass. Then her thermal sweep catches something it shouldn't: a dark stone nodule half-buried in the rubble, three degrees warmer than the rock around it, pulsing on a schedule that no battery and no isotope could keep. When the pulse arrives thirty-six minutes early, as if it knew she was reaching for it, Wren leaves the scrap behind and takes the stone instead.Inside the glass is a human brain, vitrified and braided through with a strange carbon-silicon lattice, frozen mid-transfer at forty-one percent. The timing points to one man: Dr. Idris Kell, the brilliant, abrasive physicist who vanished when the research ship Kestrel Margin broke apart in 2207, taking his unfinished theory of mind transfer with him. High on a mountain in Chile's Atacama Desert, Wren and three artificial minds of very different temperaments coax the substrate back to life. It grows in the sunlight. It lights up nine point four seconds before every dawn. And slowly, piece by piece, something inside it begins to speak. The voice that emerges is not quite Kell, and not quite anyone else. Every memory he recovers costs him another, and every answer raises a harder question. Is he the man who died in the belt, owing debts to a wife, a daughter, a crew, and three patients lost to his methods Or is he someone new, free to set that past down What really happened in the final minutes aboard the Kestrel Margin, and whose life paid for his survival The Last Plank is a hard science fiction novel about salvage in every sense: of metal, of memory, and of a self that has been rebuilt one plank at a time. Morgan Burns brings the grit of deep-space labor and the precision of real physics to the oldest question we have about identity. If every part of you is replaced, are you still the same ship, and do you still owe what the old one left unpaid. …

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Eight billion people are leaving Earth. Meo is staying. The Departure doesn't arrive with sirens or burning cities. It arrives the way an office empties after a farewell party: politely, efficiently, with forms to sign and keys to turn in. With ninety days left before the last transit gates close, Seattle is quietly packing up, and Meo, an out-of-work UI designer with an overdue electric bill, has been using his final notice to level a wobbly kitchen table. He won't sign the irrevocable waiver. He won't board. And he has no idea how to survive alone on a planet built to be run by billions. What follows is a race against a world that starts shutting itself down. Ruth Kessler, a blunt Seattle City Light engineer, hands him a brass key to the substation and a crash course in keeping the grid alive. Tomas Reyes, a veteran chip-fab technician in Camas, pours decades of hard-won knowledge into him before his own departure. And Hollis, the AI Meo builds to watch over the dams, the lines, and the machines, becomes the only other mind left to argue with. Then the systems begin to fail one by one, as expired certificates and forgotten renewal dates switch off the infrastructure nobody stayed behind to maintain.Keeping the lights on means more than repairs. It means rebuilding industry from the ground up, casting parts, etching chips, and finally entrusting his own aging body to long sleeps that stretch from years into decades and from decades into centuries. Each time Meo wakes, the world Hollis has built is stranger, quieter, and more beautiful, and the question of what one person owes to an empty home grows harder to answer.Sector 9 is a grounded, deeply human novel about staying behind and taking care of what is left. Spanning a single stubborn refusal to a millennium of stewardship, Morgan Burns delivers a story of persistence, grief, and quiet devotion, and of a message sent across the dark to the people who left, telling them the house is still standing.…
