In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. A very attractive copy in contemporary full calf binding with gilt tooled spine, marbled edges and endpapers. Pages are xx, xvi, 1-949. Portrait frontispiece and a few small engravings in text (this is not the later version with plates). The book was the property of Lord Porchester, 4th Earl of Car…navon, of Highclere Castle. There is a nice gift inscription on the flyleaf from William H Trumantle, gifting the book to Porchester on his leaving Eton, and a bookplate "Highclere of Highclere" on the front pastedown. Also a later owner's name shown. The binding has some minor wear including a dig to the spine and a short crack to the top joint, but the binding is sound and the pages are very clean.

Ugly on the outside, bit solid on the in! Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715) was Bishop of Sarum (Salisbury), and a respected preacher, academic, writer and historian. Closely associated with the Whig party, he was one of the few close friends with whom King William III confided, and hence the dedication to the King in this volume. The Thirty-nine Articles of Religion, finalised in 1571, are the historically defining statements of doctrines and practices of the Church of England with respect to the controversies of the English Reformation. The Thirty-nine Articles form part of the Book of Common Prayer used by the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion (including the Episcopal Church), as well as by denominations outside of the Anglican Communion that identify with the Anglican tradition.

Newe House was built in 1622 by Sir Robert Bright, in the late 1640s it was sold to Sir William Spring, who had been a prominent Parliamentarian during the Civil War. The house remained in the Spring family until the mid-nineteenth century, being used as the family dower house. The Spring family coat-of-arms is still apparent above the main door to the manor.Wing (CD-ROM, 1996), B5792; Gilbert Burnet (16431715), bishop of Salisbury and historian. '. In the meantime, in autumn 1699 Burnet had published An Exposition of the Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England. The Exposition could be considered the logical extension of Burnet's discourse on the Trinity. In it he applied a latitudinarian epistemology not just to the Trinity, but to all the doctrinal articles of the church. It was also intimately connected with his History of the Reformation. If his History of the Reformation was an attempt to rewrite English church history from the perspective of a late seventeenth-century latitudinarian divine, then his Exposition was its theological counterpart. Burnet himself described his Exposition as a 'proper addition to the History of the Reformation, to explain and prove the doctrine that was then established' (Bishop Burnet's History, 658). As the logical extension of both his Four Discourses and his History of the Reformation, the Exposition was one of Burnet's most important works, and one which the high-church party could hardly ignore for long .'
