Édition originale française, sans l'atlas. Sir Alexander Burnes (1805-1841), surnommé « Bokhara Burnes », fut un explorateur et agent politique britannique qui joua un rôle clé dans le « Grand Jeu », la rivalité entre la Grande-Bretagne et la Russie tsariste pour le contrôle de l'Asie centrale. Après avoir rejoint l'armée en 1821 et s'être distingué par sa maîtrise des langues locales, il mena plusieurs missions diplomatiques et d'exploration décisives. En 1831, il organisa notamment la première rencontre entre le Maharajah Ranjit Singh et un commandant britannique, Lord Bentinck, lors de laquelle fut exposé le célèbre diamant Koh-i-Noor. Il cartographia également le fleuve Indus et reconnut en secret la route de Kaboul à Boukhara, produisant les premiers rapports détaillés sur la politique afghane. Son récit de voyage publié en 1834 connut un immense succès et lui valut la reconnaissance de prestigieuses sociétés savantes, dont la Royal Society et les sociétés géographiques britannique et française.
