Burnaby made his way through Russian Asia even though it had been closed to travellers, with war breaking out between the Russian army and the Turcoman tribesmen.Burnaby made this trek in the winter of 1875-76, trudging through extreme winter blizzards and coming close to death, evading the Russian army, and eventually making his way to the Khanate.Frederick Burnay (1842-1885) was a British Army intelligence officer, known for his adventurous spirit and his pioneering achievements. He was seen as a favourable figure in the minds of Victorian England, travelling to various countries, speaking numerous foreign languages, and publishing several books.With twenty-four pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of Vol I as well as the rear endpaper and paste down.With a bookseller's labels to the front paste down of Vol I, from the W.
