Printed title, leaf with dedication to 'Robert John Baron Carington', leaf with list of subscribers, leaf with Burges' introduction, text and 75 lithographic plates printed recto only in sanguine; text ruled and printed in sanguine throughout. Original publisher's red morocco-backed buckram boards, title gilt to spine. [PROVENANCE: Large armorial bookplate to front pastedown with the motto 'Deo favente tutus' and the note 'Given in memory of / John F. Duthoit, A. I. R. B. A. / 1879 - 1944']. Burges spent a year and a half in France and Italy in the early 1850s, and when in France he decided to 'write a sort of grammar of thirteenth-century architecture, and to illustrate it with carefully measured details'. His plans came to nothing because of the appearance of the prospectus for Viollet-le-Duc's Dictionary covering the same ground. Burges returned to the drawings in the 1860s, and from 1864 onwards various helpers prepared the lithographic plates from which the present volume was ultimately printed in 1870. Burges undertook that the lithographic stones would be defaced after publication, and that no copies would be sold in the trade, and thus the number of copies of the book printed more or less coincides with the 194 copies accounted for by the list of subscribers.…
