Published in… 1927 by G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York.Bound in the publisher's original cloth binding with unclipped dust wrapper. Illustrated end papers with a map of the Dutch East Indies. With frontispiece and fifty-three black and white photographs. Collated complete.The account of W. Douglas Burden and his wife, Catherine White Burden's expedition to the Dutch East Indies, specfically the Island of Komodo in 1926.Mrs Burden is credited for many of the photographs.They aimed to return with a Komodo Dragon, rumoured to grow up to thirty feet. In actuality, the Komodo Dragons they found were approximately ten feet long, but no less ferocious than expected. The Burdens collected over 3,000 insect and amphibian specimens and three Komodo lizards.A year after this publication, Burden founded the Department of Animal Behavior at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Bound in the publisher's cloth with unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, in excellent condition. Minor bumping to extremities, noticeable at the head and tail of spine. Offsetting to free end papers. Ink inscription to front end paper. Dust wrapper, generally smart. Chips and creasing to extremities. Loss of paper to top and tail of spine. Loss also to bottom corner of rear board. Closed tears to upper front joint and rear board. Significant discolouration from sunning to spine and extremities of boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
