Rather than repeating the conventional narrative, John P. Burch assembled a sympathetic account that attempts to explain the motivations, operations, and personalities surrounding one of the Civil War's most controversial figures. Illustrated throughout, the work recounts guerrilla campaigns along the Missouri-Kansas border while incorporating episodes involving Frank James, Cole Younger, and other figures who later became legends of the American West. Today it remains an intriguing contribution to the contested historiography of the Border War and the evolution of Quantrill's postwar reputation. CONDITION: Very Good. The bindings are tight and square. Text is clean with light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf handling wear with minor hand-soiling to the cloth. Pages 10-11 show offsetting from a now-lost newspaper clipping. Spine ends and corners are rubbed but not broken. A solid, attractive example of an increasingly uncommon regional publication. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - REINTERPRETING THE CIVIL WAR'S MOST CONTROVERSIAL GUERRILLA. Published nearly sixty years after the Civil War, Burch's work reflects the continuing effort by former Confederates and their descendants to preserve an alternative interpretation of guerrilla warfare along the Missouri-Kansas border. Drawing upon testimony attributed to Captain Harrison Trow, the volume presents Quantrill not merely as an outlaw but as a Confederate partisan operating within the brutal irregular warfare that characterized the Trans-Mississippi theater.
