Erstausgabe
8vo. pp. xii, 298, [1]errata + [8]publisher's catalogue. with half-title. numerous wood-engraved illus. original blind-stamped cloth (light marginal foxing, ads browned). First Edition of the English Translation by Henry Enfield Roscoe, published simultaneously with the first German edition. Bunsen's studies of the composition of gases given off from blast furnaces showed that 50 to 80 percent or more of the heat was wasted and led to elaboration of his methods of measuring volumes of gases in this, his only publication. The book examines the basic physical and chemical properties of gases, including their compressibility, expansion, density, diffusion, and combustion. It served as a foundational text for understanding gas behavior through experimental techniques and calculations. Bunsen is also known for developing the Bunsen battery and the Bunsen burner. cfDuveen p. 109. cfHoneyman 548.
