In den WarenkorbContaining, a faithful narrative of the loss of His Majesty's ship the Wager on a desolate island in the latitude 47 south, longitude 81:40 west: with the proceedings and conduct of the officers and crew, and the hardships they endured in the said island for the space of five months; their bold attempt for liberty, in coasting t…he southern part of the vast region of Patagonia; setting out with upwards of eighty souls in their boats; the loss of the cutter; their passage through the steights of Mageilan; an account of their manner of living on the voyage on seals, wild horses, dogs, &c. and the incredible hardships they frequently underwent for want of food of any kind; a description of the several places where they touch'd in the streights of Magellan, with an account of the inhabitants, &c. and their safe arrival to the Brazil, after sailing one thousand leagues in a long-boat; their reception from the Portugese; an account of the disturbances at Rio Grand; their arrival at Rio Janeiro; their passage and usage on board a Portugese ship to Lisbon; and their return to England. Interspersed with many entertaining and curious observations, not taken notice of by Sir John Narborough, or any other journalist. The whole compiled by persons concerned in the facts related, viz. John Bulkeley and John Cummins, late gunner and carpenter of the Wager.London : printed for Jacob Robinson, publisher, at the Golden-Lion in Ludgate-Street, 1743. Octavo (200 x 130 mm), later half calf over marbled papered boards, spine with contrasting leather title labels lettered in gilt; pp. xx, 220; woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials; scattered light foxing and browning, most leaves with pale water-stain around the foot of the gutter, but overall a good copy. First edition (with the authors' names stated) of this account of the eventful voyage of HMSWager, one of the ships in Anson's fleet. It was written by two of the ship's crew - John Bulkeley, a gunner, and John Cummins, carpenter. Another 1743 edition was published anonymously. TheWagerbecame separated from the squadron soon after rounding Cape Horn, and ran aground in the Guayaneco Archipelago off the southern coast of Chile on 13 May 1741. The majority of the crew, led by Bulkeley and Cummins, mutinied against Captain David Cheap. Leaving Cheap and a small group of loyal sailors behind on what would become known as Wager Island, the mutineers commandeered a modified schooner, the Speedwell, and were able to successfully navigate their way back through the Straits of Magellan, reaching Rio de Janeiro after a harrowing four-month journey. However, only 29 out of the original group of 81 who had set out in the Speedwell survived the ordeal. Bulkeley, Cummins and several other mutineers eventually arrived back in England on New Year's Day, 1743. Of the group of twenty men who had remained on Wager Island, only Cheap himself and three others would ultimately survive following their rescue by a group of Chono people. They would not return to England until 1745. Sabin 9108; Borba de Moraes I, 133; Hill 210; Howgego B-186.

In den WarenkorbLondon: Jacob Robinson. 1743. 8vo. Modern full calf, gilt red morocco lettering-piece to spine; pp. xx, 220; woodcut headpieces and initials, printed on thick paper; a few light scuffs to boards, boards slightly bowed; slight offset to first and final pages; sporadic light foxing (heavier to quires G and I), old repair to inner…margin of a1~sup~v~sup~; ownership inscription at head of title, cancelled in ink; nonetheless an attractive copy.First edition, the variant with the authors' names on the title page (priority not established), of this account of the 1741 mutiny aboard the Wager, stranded on a remote island off the coast of present-day Chile, now considered one of the most harrowing naval disasters of the eighteenth century.During the 1739-48 War of Jenkins' Ear between Britain and Spain - named for Captain Robert Jenkins, whose ear was purportedly cut off by Spanish coast guards in 1731 - a British squadron under Commodore George Anson was sent to 'annoy and distress' Spanish possessions in the Pacific. Whilst rounding Cape Horn, the HMS Wager was struck by hurricane-force winds and ran aground on an uninhabited island (now Wager Island) on 14 May 1741. Following the deaths of several crew members due to starvation or hypothermia, and the desertion of several others, the authors of the present work - gunman John Bulkeley and carpenter John Cummins - staged a mutiny against Captain David Cheap (who by this time had shot another crew member), abandoned the islands, and set out for Brazil with over eighty crew members. Of these, only about thirty survived; Bulkeley and Cummins published the present work, dedicated to Edward Vernon, Vice-Admiral of the Blue, in an attempt to clear their names. They were never charged for mutiny due to lack of legislation about officers' authority over crew in the event of the loss of their ship.Following Cheap's return to England and subsequent acquittal, Bulkeley immigrated to the Pennsylvania Colony; another edition of his Voyage to the South Seas was published in Philadelphia in 1757.ESTC T142350; Sabin 9108.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition thus. Portrait, trimmed and laid down, with a tear to the leaf it's laid down on, not affecting print, and five folding plates. 8vo. Contemporary calf, recased. x, 11-408, 54pp London, R. Walker, This rare pirated edition has a somewhat complex bibliography. As publishers scrambled to meet demand for an account of… Commodore Anson's voyage, various pirated accounts were published using, without scruple, the actual first hand accounts of John Philips, and for the exploits of the crew of the Wager, Bulkeley and Cummins together with contributions from one other anonymous voyage participant. This incarnation was one issued by the Knaptons in concert with Walker, as being by an "Officer of the Squadron". The latter re-issued it in 1745 (as here) with a different title intending it to look more official and without attribution, though the text and illustrations are the same. There were, furthermore, at least two rival publications almost identical (but without the Appendix material) using the same sources which were ascribed to "An officer of the Fleet" both of these were issued in 1744, in parts - one by Merryman, and in a different setting by Plumb. Merryman gives an amusing advice not to fall for his rivals' offerings which were more expensive. His parts cost a farthing each, and though claiming priority his images which are crude clearly derive from those far superior in the "Squadron" version, of which the above is a second issue with a new title-page.
