Illustrati da complessive 14 tavole incise fuori testo su 17, mancando le 3 tav. del primo volume: Vienna assediata; Tommaso Cornelio; Marco Aurelio Severino. Esemplare con leggera uniforme brunitura, lievi difetti.Raccolta rarissima che contiene 8 lettere di Galileo Galilei poco note. Tre volumi in prima edizione, ad eccezione del primo volume. Due lettere minori sono nei primi due: a Curzio Piacchena delle virtù di un pezzo di calamita di cinque libbre, Padova 16 Novembre 1607 (p. 148-152); e una a Francesco Rinuccini che stima l'Ariosto superiore al Tasso, Arcetri 19 Maggio 1640 (p. 152-157). Il quarto volume è il più importante, in quanto varie missive si riferiscono alla "Historia e dimostrazioni intorno alle Macchie Solari e loro accidenti". Dopo una letteraria al Cesi  del 5 Gennaio, in altre due al Cesi (dalle Selve li 25 di Gennaro 1612, pp. 24-31) Galileo, "rimettendosi alla determinazione di V.E. e degli altri Signori Lincei" propone il titolo della sua prossima pubblicazione, e varianti da apportare al testo "che davano fastidio al Revisore". Segue altra lettera analoga al Cesi. In quella del 12 Maggio (p. 31-34). tratta del "Discorso intorno alle cose che stanno sull'acqua". E ancora il 26 di Maggio un'altra sulle Macchie Solari (p. 34-36). Poi informa il Cesi del contenuto di una missiva inviata a Marco Velseri "dove vederà accennata l'opinion mia". Il 30 giugno scrive al Cesi di bisogne astronomiche (p.36-39) "noi non doviamo desiderare che la natura si accomodi a quello che parrebbe meglio disposto et ordinato a noi, ma conviene che accomodiamo l'intelletto nostro a quello che ella ha fatto sicuri tale esser l'ottimo e non altro", con riferimenti al Lagalla. L'8 giugno ultima lettera al Cesi di varie sue bisogne ( p.39-42).Queste lettere fino ad allora sconosciute e ripubblicate solo nel 1818 a Modena in "Memorie e lettere inedite finora o disperse di Galilei" (Cinti, 188) sono importanti per dirimere la controversia tra Galilei e Scheiner su chi avesse per primo studiato il fenomeno delle Macchie Solari. Il vol IV contiene inoltre altre quattro lettere di interesse galileiano: una di Mario Guiducci al Cesi di faccenda letteraria "ho preso per me il consiglio che V.E. dava al Sig. Galileo" riguardo "il torto che m'è stato fatto senza ragione da quel buon Sig. Grasso" (p.43-44); e tre di Francesco Stelluti tra cui una nella quale invia a Cesi un madrigale per un'opera di Galileo Galilei: le Macchie Solari (p.52-57). Antonio Bulifon (1649-1707) editore francese attivo a Napoli si definiva "semplice libraio ignorante, ma amichissimo dei virtuosi". This specific rebranding serves as historical evidence of the shift in perception of women writers: no longer merely "virtuous ladies" who wrote casually, but acknowledged professionals worthy of the title "Poetess." Scholars like Marie-Francoise Piejus have further noted that this title change signals that the literary woman was finally accepted as a professional feature of Italian cultural life, legitimized under the sponsorship of the fashionable Academies, rather than remaining an exception defined solely by her character. Grazie alla prosa elegante e vivace dell'autore, il lettore si trova coinvolto in un'avventura ricca di colpi di scena e di incontri con personaggi di spicco della società napoletana dell'epoca.

Incisione originale su rame (cm. 31,5x21 più margini). Ottimo esemplare. Non comune.

Legatura coeva in pergamena con nervi e titolo ms. al ds. (minuscole mancanze ai margini inferiori dei piatti). Un timbro a secco ed una dedica sulla carta di guardia libera anteriore. Timbretto araldico al frontis. Carte ingiallite, ma ottimo esemplare. Raro. Il Bulifon iniziò a pubblicare nel 1693 la raccolta di lettere terminata nel 1698 con questo quarto volume che, in ragione del suo contenuto, rappresenta la parte più interessante dell intera sua opera. In questo libro sono infatti pubblicate sei lettere di Galileo Galilei fino ad allora non conosciute. Tra l altro queste lettere, riguardando anche il tema delle macchie solari, sono particolarmente importanti perché esisteva una controversia con Scheiner su chi avesse studiato per primo questo fenomeno. 12mo (cm. 14,8), 6 cc.nn., 373(1) pp., 5 cc.nn.
