Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. 12mo, 238 pages, embossed purple cloth, foxed. Rev. Bulfinch was the son of famed architect, Charles Bulfinch. S. G. B. also corresponded with Edgar Allan Poe. His brother, Thomas, authored BULFINCH'S MYTHOLOGY. This antislavery Civil War novel by this Unitarian hymnist reflects his experiences in Charleston, SC, between 1831 and 1838. " [I] wished to do justice to the better side of southern character, while portraying some features of this fatal system, which has been scarce less injurious to the master than to the slave . . . Some particulars in the narrative, which may seem improbable, are derived from fact; such is the incident connected with a popular song; and such the singular legal decisions referred to in the charge of Judge Stanley to the jury - Preface." [ Wright Fiction II, 411].…

Cloth. Zustand: Good. First Edition. Octavo, 238pp, [4]. Tan pebbled cloth, title in gilt on spine. Considerable wear to cloth, front free endpaper removed. Text block shaken, but remains solid. "A concrete illustration of the ill effect of slavery upon the morals of a slave-trader." - Anti-Slavery Sentiment in American Literature by Turner, page 107. The author of this work, Stephen Greenleaf Bulfinch (1809-1870), was a Unitarian clergyman, author and hymn writer. First edition of Honor; or, The Slave-Dealer's Daughter, by Stephen G. Bulfinch. First Edition. Small, slim 12mo (16cm.); publisher's blue cloth, printed paper spine label; yellow coated endpapers; vi,[7]-108pp. Quite nice, with just mild overall rubbing and slight fading to spine cloth; spine label remains intact and bright. A superior copy. Bulfinch's third published book and first collection of poetry, written while he was serving as Assistant Pastor of the Second Independent (i.e. Universalist) Church of Charleston, South Carolina. The volume is dedicated to Bulfinch's superior, Rev. Samuel Gilman and is comprised in roughly equal measure of "Devotional" poems, on religious and patriotic themes; and "Miscellaneous" poems, including sonnets and occasional works. Bulfinch was the brother of Thomas, author of "Bulfinch's Mythology," and is mostly remembered today (if at all) as a hymnodist, composer of such once-popular works as 'Hath not thy heart within thee burned?" and "O, suffering friend of human kind.".…
