Fine map of Sebastopol showing the early military stages and formations of the Crimean War. With letterpress text providing military and geographical information. The war in Crimea took place in 1854-1855 and saw the Russian Imperial army oppose the allied troops of France, Britain and the Ottoman Empire in a series of battles that culminated in the famous siege of Sebastopol (Sevastopol) in the winter of 1854 and the subsequent defeat of the Russian Army. The historical event has been immortalised in the work of several artists and writers such as Leo Tolstoy, who served in the war and later wrote Sevastopol Sketches, three short stories based on his first hand experience of the Siege.

Proveniente dal teatro, dove era stato nella Comp. di T. Pavlova, esordisce nel 1935 in "Ginevra degli Almieri" di G. Brignone, imponendosi negli anni seguenti in ruoli di eroe rude, spiccio e generoso di film in costume come: "Cavalleria" di G. Alessandrini (1937), o d'argomento bellico: "Luciano Serra pilota" (1938), sempre di Alessandrini, che si aggiudica il premio come migliore film al Festival di Venezia. Da allora è un susseguirsi di successi: al ritmo di tre-quattro film all'anno Nazzari si impone nell' immaginario collettivo come archetipo dell'italiano dell'epoca, adorato dal pubblico femminile che fino ad allora sospirava per i divi di Hollywood. Non disdegna peraltro i film dei "telefoni bianchi" dove spesso, con ironia, fa il verso a sé stesso. Nel dopoguerra, dopo una parentesi neorealista con: "Il Bandito" di A. Lattuada (1946), vive una seconda stagione di grande successo popolare con i melò d'appendice di R. Matarazzo ("Tormento", "Catene", "I Figli di nessuno", ecc. ). La coppia A. Nazzari-Y. Sanson dal 1949 in poi fa piangere tutte le italiane in sala ottenendo incassi da capogiro. Nazzari può a ragione considerarsi un'icona del cinema italiano, se non altro per il fatto, forse unico, di avere interpretato sé stesso in tre film distanziati nel tempo: "Apparizione" di J. de Limur (1943) con A. Valli, "Le notti di Cabiria" di F. Fellini (1957) con G. Masina e "Il Gaucho" di D. Risi (1964) con V. Gassman.
