There is a duplicate (13th) image for Simchath-Thora included, apparently bound in by mistake. Poems by Nadel on The Jewish holidays interspersed with the plate pages. Paper of upper board much browned/toned at edges; cloth over spine is lost with super cloth exposed. Shallow damp line in the front margin of the first few leaves. Good only thus.

Der Einband ist an den Kanten etwas berieben, an den Kanten stärker, dort leicht durchrieben. Einband auf Grund Alter, Sonnenlicht und Gebrauch verfärbt, gebräunt, leicht abgegriffen. Soweit aber nicht groß beschädigt, nicht beschmutzt. Seiten und Schnittkanten sind verfärbt, gebräunt. Seiten etwas stockfleckig, gebräunt. Buchdeckelinnenseite mit kleinem Buchhandelsaufkleber, Vorsatzblatt mit Preisangabe und Namenseintrag. Buchgelenk zwischen Seite 8 und 9 oberflächlich etwas aufgebrochen, Seiten trotzdem fest gebunden. Seiten unbeschnitten, ausser die obere. Im Buch 4 Bildnisse. Pulling to fore-edge of few pages. Text in German. Binding in good-, interior in overall very good condition.

Joseph Budko (1888-1940) , was a "painter and graphic artist. Budko, who was born in Plonsk, received a traditional Jewish education. In 1902 he went to study at the art school in Vilna. In 1910 Budko moved to Berlin where he learned metal-chasing and also studied at the Museum of Arts and Crafts. In Berlin Budko met Hermann Struck who taught him the technique of etching. Eventually he also took up woodcutting, lithography, and painting. In 1933 Budko settled in Palestine. In 1935 he became the director of the reopened New Bezalel school of arts and crafts. Budko stressed the teaching of graphic design and utilized the ornamental value of the Hebrew letters. Budko's subject matter was determined by the Jewish environment in which he grew up and to which he returned in Jerusalem. Budko developed a style that combined the personal with the Jewish, being a synthesis of Jewish tradition and modern art. He also revived the spirit of Jewish book illustration, adapting it to modern design. Among the books he illustrated are the Haggadah, and he designed many bookplates. This set is comprised of all of the original writings of the acclaimed Hebrew-language poet and writer Hayyim Nahman Bialik (1873-1934), until 1923. Also included are two of his more significant translations; Cervantes' "Don Quixote" and Friedrich Schiller's "William Tell". The first two volumes contain all of Bialik's poems ("Shirim", Vol.1) and prose writings ("Sipurim Divrei Sifrut", Vol.2). The third volume contains his translation of Don Quixote, illustrated throughout with b/w reproductions after images from the 1859 Barcelona edition of Don Quixote (including an illustrated frontispiece portrait of Cervantes)*.
