Hardcover. Zustand: VG for age. 'New edition'. Vol.1 was first pub.1857, a 4th ed. of Vols.1 & 2 appeared in 1864 and the 3rd Vol. (on Scotland) posthumously in 1868. Vol.1: xlii+501+(2, pub.notice of Buckles Miscellaneous and Posthumous Works); Vol.2: xii+597+(2, as Vol.1); Vol.3: xvi+548+32 (November 1875 pub.cataogue). First 2 volumes have a small gilt ownership label top front pastedown and all have a small early stamp 'Chippens Bank', which also appears top t.p. (this is fairly inoffensive), Vol.3 has label removal ghost top front pastedown, a further ealy sig. top verso front of all endpapers, front end gutters all slightly opening but quite secure and rear ones good, light tanning patches to some end leaves and t.p. Vol.2; Red cloth covers clean, slight cloth blistering in places, spines all sunfaded, but miinimall wear, blind-stamped borders and central motifs, some minor dustiness to top edges. Full sets in original binding of this early edition apparently scarce.

Zustand: Very Good. 3 Vols, with over 1500pp, large 8vo, finely bound in half morocco by BUMPUS, raised bands, gilt lettered, top edge gilt, Provenane: attractive bookplate in each volume, very good condition, Longmans, Green and Co., London, 1872. * finely bound set by BUMPUS with scholarly papers on historical subjects including Africa, witchcraft, esoteric facts, etc. previously uncollected works of this great rationalist historian.

One page. 16mo, evidence of tipping in on reverse, mainly good. "My dear Miss [Shirrell?] | I rejoice to tell you that 300 copies of your book are sold. | Sincerely Yours [.]".
