Se trata de un grabado en cobre, con líneas limítrofes coloreadas a mano con acuarela. Fue elaborado por Guillaume Delisle, uno de los geógrafos más influyentes de su época, y posteriormente actualizado y reeditado por su brillante discípulo Philippe Buache. Este último sucedió a Delisle como Geógrafo del Rey de Francia. Para la realización de este mapa, Delisle se basó en las investigaciones del historiador y geógrafo hispanoportugués Rodrigo Méndez Silva (1606-1670). Méndez Silva, quien fue "cronista general de España y ministro del supremo Consejo de Castilla", publicó en 1645 la obra "Población general de España: sus trofeos, blasones, y conquistas heroycas", la cual permitió actualizar el conocimiento geográfico de la Península Ibérica en su tiempo. Título completo: Mapa de España Trazado por Guillaume Delisle sobre la descripción de Rodrigo Méndez Silva y sobre diversas relaciones y mapas manuscritos o impresos. Rectificado por las observaciones astronómicas, el todo aumentado y verificado en 1765 por Phil. Contiene abundante información respecto a los asentamientos, las plantaciones, los caminos, los puertos, los molinos, etc. Elementos indicados en una leyenda y que dan cuenta de la prosperidad de la isla. La orografía y las zonas boscosas están representadas de manera pictográfica. Este mapa antiguo además cuenta con tres rosas de los vientos y líneas de navegación. Philippe Buache (1700-1773) fue uno de los más afamados cartógrafos del siglo XVIII. Fue yerno del notable Guillaume Delisle y se encargó del negocio familiar a la muerte de su suegro. Recibió el título de Geógrafo del Rey en 1729 y fue electo para la Academie des Sciences el mismo año. Fue un geógrafo teórico pionero, especialmente en lo que respecta a curvas de nivel y cuencas hidrográficas. Très rare brochure illustrée de 2 cartes en couleurs, gravées par Buache. Une carte céleste et une carte terrestre qui sont dépliantes et aquarellées à l'époque. Ces cartes représentent les trajectoires de la comète de Halley lors de ses trois apparitions en 1531, 1607 et 1682. Edmond Halley avait prédit qu'elle reviendrait en 1758. Dans le présent mémoire, cette comète est annoncée pour 1757-1758. La comète réapparut en décembre 1758 avec un passage au périhélie le 13 mars 1759. Thomas Jomard, chanoine régulier de Sainte-Geneviève, était l'assistant de l'astronome Pingré et ce mémoire, selon Lalande, a été supervisé par Pingré, auteur d'une "Cométographie", publiée en 1783. A celestial map and a terrestrial map showing the trajectories of Halley's comet during its three appearances in 1531, 1607 and 1682. Edmond Halley predicted that the comet would return in 1758. In this memoir, this comet is announced for 1757-1758. The comet reappeared in December 1758 with a perihelion passage on March 13, 1759. Thomas Jomard was the assistant of the astronomer Pingré and this book, according to Lalande, was supervised by Pingré, author of 'a Cometography', published in 1783. -.

First presented by Delisle in manuscript by Buache to the Academie des Sciences on the 8th of April 1750, to illustrate Delisle's memoir (an abridged history) of the recent Russian explorations and discoveries in Alaska, and the spurious voyages of one Admiral Bartholomew de Fonte. De Fonte's tale was first published in 1708, and his supposed discovery of a Northwest passage from the Atlantic to the South and Tartarian seas inspired generations of explorers to make voyages of discovery in the region. The chart shows in detail the explorations in the North Pacific of Vitus Bering in 1728 and 1741; Joseph Nicolas Delisle's voyage with Captain Tchirkov in 1741; and De Frondat's voyage from China to California in 1709. Also depicted are the routes of Spanish Galleons from Acapulco in Mexico to Manilla in the Philippines. Wagner "Northwest Coast", 1570 and chapter XXII. A FINE COPY.

Map. Engraving. Image measures 12.25" x 15.5". This fascinating sheet contains two maps-- a French map of Western discoveries in Russia and the Northwest Passage area, and a Japanese map of the same area, taken from Japan by German explorer Englebert Kaempfer. Both maps contain notes on discoveries and speculations, islands, land masses, and bodies of water. This map offers an interesting comparison between Eastern and Western perspectives and achievement in cartography, and on the first mapping of Russia and the Northwest Passage. This was published as a supplement to Diderot's Encyclopedie. In very good condition wiith some scattered light foxing. Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) was an important French mapmaker during the 18th century. His "Atlas Universel" was one of the most significant atlases of the period, integrating older sources with more modern surveyed maps in order to convey correct geographical and political information. Philippe Buache (1700--1773) was a French geographer who trained under the geographer Guillaume Delisle. This map of Lake Geneva is a fine example of his work.

A fascinating map showing two early maps of the American north-west. the upper map shows the new discoveries in the northern Pacific. The coastline of Asia is more or less correctly drawn, but America is wildly inaccurate. The lower part is an extract from a Japanese map brought back to Europe by Kaempfer, for the collection of Hans Sloane. This, shows the same area even more fancifully. The lower map is flanked by texts - an 'Avertissement'. and an extract from Kaempfer's travels. Worm hole in bottom margin not affecting the image Copper engraving. Fine condition, good margins. Later colouring. Size: 40 x 32 cm. (15½ x 12½ inches).

Uncoloured; some soiling and staining, light creases, old repair to large tear up the left-hand side and half-way across the sheet, otherwise presntable. A highly decorative figured frontispiece.

The map reflects the political changes in France. The map has the inset continuation of the N.W. coast corrected according to Capt. Cook's discoveries. "I.de Quadra et Vancouver", "Nootka", "Nouvel Hanovre", "Nouveau Cornouailles" are added. Also many names are added in the northern regions. The King's name is removed from the title and De l'Isle and Buache are referred to as First Geographers to the Academy of Science, rather than the King. Buache must have used the information from the charts in "Neptune des cotes occidentales d'Amerique sur le Grand Ocean.".
