Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. BEN SHAHN BY BERNARDA BRYSON SHAHN 1972 HUGE HARD COVER DJ 345 PLATES. I am about to list one of the largest books I have ever owned and wondering how I am going to pack it up for shipment when it sells. But let s face that when the time comes, and rest assured, it will be carefully packed. Please find then: Ben Shahn by Bernarda Bryson Shahn. This huge hard cover book (14 x 14 inches, 373 pages) was published by Harry N. Abrams of New York dated 1972. The book is bound in dark red heavy weave cloth with a cold design on the cover and gilt titles on the spine. It is protected by a glossy, double-edge-folded dust jacket. The book is lavishly illustrated, as you would expect, with 345 illustrations including 154 in full color. Many of these plates are tipped-in and others are fold-outs. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket has some minor edge wear including two small splits at the top of the spine. The hard covers are almost without wear and tear except for some very minor bumping to the lower corners. Inside, the book is unmarked and the interior pages and plates too are clean and bright without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound, amazing considering the huge size of the book and the strain that there must be on the binding. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. Ben Shahn (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. The format is approximately 14 inches by 14 inches. 373, [3] pages. With 345 illustrations (154 in full color). Minor DJ wear and soiling. Sections includes "Aesthetics for the Artist.", Evolution of Images, Changing Images, Murals, and Drawings. Biographical outline. Selected bibliography. List of drawings. Index. This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US. A massive and a wide ranging examination of Shahn's career Ben Shahn (September 12, 1898 March 14, 1969) was an American artist. He is best known for his works of social realism and his series of lectures published as The Shape of Content. Shahn began his path to becoming an artist in New York, where he was first trained as a lithographer. Shahn's early experiences with lithography and graphic design are apparent in his later prints and paintings which often include the combination of text and image. Shahn's primary medium was egg tempera, popular among social realists. Although Shahn attended New York University as a biology student in 1919, he went on to pursue art at City College in 1921 and then at the National Academy of Design. Shahn's series of California labor leader Tom Mooney won him the recognition of Diego Rivera. In May and June 1933, he served as an assistant to Diego Rivera while Rivera executed the Rockefeller Center mural. Also during this period, Shahn met photojournalist Bernarda Bryson, who would later become his second wife. After he became successful, Shahn only accepted commissions which he felt were of personal or social value. Bernarda Bryson Shahn (March 7, 1903 December 12, 2004) was an American painter and lithographer. She also wrote and illustrated children's books including The Zoo of Zeus and Gilgamesh. The artist Ben Shahn was her "life companion" and they married in 1969, shortly before his death. Already a trained printmaker, Bryson worked for the Depression-era Resettlement Administration, later part of the Farm Security Administration on a project with Shahn in the 1930s to document rural life. Her lithographs from this series were first printed in the studio she and Shahn established in Washington for the Resettlement Administration and published in full in 1995 as The Vanishing American Frontier. In 1939, Bryson and Shahn produced a set of 13 murals for the Treasury Department Art Project's Section of Fine Arts entitled Resources of America inspired by Walt Whitman's poem "I See America Working" and installed at the United States Post Office-Bronx Central Annex. Bryson worked primarily as an illustrator beginning in the 1940s, producing works for Harpers as well as Life, Seventeen, and Scientific American, and later for several children's books. Her illustrations of the Princeton University Eating Club and of Senator Taft as he is groomed for his 1948 Republican Presidential Candidacy exemplify her minimalistic representation of satire and straightforward style. She continued painting throughout her life in a figurative style often with references to Classical mythology, and she worked was exhibited in solo shows at galleries in New York and New Jersey. Her paintings are owned by collections including the Whitney Museum of Art.

Softcover. Limited edition. One of 60 copies hand-numbered in Roman Numerals, this numbered LII, and printed on Grande Arches handmade pure rag vergé paper. Eight Ben Shahn offset lithographs after pochoir prints (11 3/4" x 15 1/4") and twenty-six page book resting in original matching sturdy clamshell box. Each print with protective wrap-around tissue-guard housed in its own titled wraps folder with short descriptive text (* below). Book: Folio. 26, [1]pp. Printed paper-covered boards with red and black lettering on cover. Frontispiece b/w photograph showing Ben Shahn and M. Crampe. With one color and three b/w photographic reproductions. Includes essays by Bernarda Bryson Shahn, Egal Feldman and Charles Westheimer as well as the letter "J'Accuse" by Emile Zola in Dreyfus' defense, addressed to French President Félix Faure. The letter appeared in the Parisian newspaper "L'Aurore" on 13 January 1898. Letter in French with English translation. Remarkable portfolio in brand new condition, still in publisher's box. Pochoir prints: 1) Captain Alfred Dreyfus, an exemplary officer and member of the French General Staff who, being a Jew, was made scapegoat and condemned for a treasonable act that he did not commit. 2) Major Armand-Auguste-Ferdinand-Marie Mercier du Paty de Clam. There could not have been a worse choice for a fair preliminary interrogation of Dreyfus than a blundering and erratic busybody who felt himself honored by the assignment. A man of fertile and cruel imagination, he had the soul of a medieval inquisitor. He was a violent anti-Semite. 3) Fernad Labori the lawyer, represented an anomaly in French legal circles: a lonely voice crying out for justice in a corrupt world. Like his famous clients, Zola, Picquart and Dreyfus, he was the subject of vicious attacks - including an attempted assassination. Like them, he attained the stature of a moral hero in the United States. He was a handsome man, full of vitality with "lungs of steel." 4) Georges Picquart was widely recognized as one of France's most promising young officers. Calm, clear-eyed, with slightly ironical honesty, a brainy dreamer of a type much more common among artists than soldiers, he loved music, spoke German, English and Spanish with equal fluency and excelled in mathematics and the military arts. It was to Picquart that Dreyfus was to owe his life, Picquart destroying his own in the process. 5) The Experts. The handwriting specialists accused by Zola of conspiracy and fraud. 6) Marie-Charles-Ferdinand-Walsin-Esterhazy. The son of a French General of an illegitimate branch of the Hungarian Esterhazys, was the man who actually peddled the French military secrets to the German military attaché in Paris. He was so utterly bored by his bourgeois world that he attempted to find relief in heroism and knavery. He was a gambler and adventurer, but without purpose, a man possessed of a fantastic and sardonic humour. 7) Labori and Picquart remained unwilling to accept any final accommodation by the courts less than the full revision of the guilty verdicts. 8) Paleologue and demange, the one a witness, the other an honored lawyer, defender of Dreyfus. New in publisher's box and shrink wrap.

Warmly inscribed on front endpaper: "To Liz [Dauber] / with blessings & high hopes that we will both see many many more such celebrations as this one, anyway that you will," signed Bernarda, undated but apparently contemporary with publication. Octavo (27cm). Beige, coarse-weave cloth; dustjacket; [56]pp; illus. Tight, clean and unmarked, but slightly musty from long storage; Very Good. In the original dustwrapper, price-clipped on front flap, slightly toned and soiled, Very Good. The inscription is to Liz Dauber, herself a well-known illustrator and book-designer and wife of American social-realist painter and printmaker Gregorio Prestopino. The Shahns and Prestopinos, besides being closely aligned socially and artistically, were neighbors in the small left-wing settlement of Roosevelt, New Jersey, founded as a WPA Resettlement Administration project in 1938. First Edition. Oblong quarto (23cm x 28cm). Pictorial wrappers; 11pp text; [44pp] illustrations and commentary. Together with the final manuscript "dummy" for the finished book, bound into vinyl wrappers with illustrations provided in xerox facsimile. Both volumes fine. Bernarda Shahn's own copies, unsigned but with Shahn estate labels tipped onto front pastedown of each volume. Bernarda Bryson Shahn was a prolific and talented artist and illustrator who contributed illustrations to no fewer than twenty published books during her long career. Her Depression-era lithographs, reproduced here, reveal her as both a skilled draftsman and a highly sensitive observer of the social landscape. This is the only full-length study of Bryson's work to appear in her lifetime, produced to accompany a traveling exhibit of her work in 1995.
